walking/jogging?

What is a good amount of walking/jogging to do daily to help loose weight?

Re: walking/jogging?

  • brynhildHow long have you been doing it? Have you noticed you can run farther now? That's kind of what we are doing but walking then running, then we will walk again, then run. We just don't time it. I guess that would be a better way of showing results.
  • I haven't done it that much yet to be completely honest with you and my shape is really sh1tty, lol, but I just feel like the 60 seconds of running isn't killing me. I thought I was worse at it than I turned out to be, but I still need the intervals. And the thing about the program is that it becomes more difficult each week so you really need to push yourself somehow; running intervals become longer for instance. But you should ask more on the board, I'm still new to it. There are several who swear by it!

To lose weight, you should be pushing yourself (sweating, tired, etc) and that level is different for everyone, so you have to see how much walking/jogging is right for you. For me, I walk/run 5 miles at least 5x per week, usually carrying handweights, and the park has many hills too so I am exhausted when I leave... takes me about an hour and a half. Then once a week I take a one-hour sculpt and tone class to help build muscle. You know your body the best and I'm sure you know when your really pushing and when your not. Good luck! :-)
  • I am on week 5 of Couch to 5k and I love it. It gradually builds endurance so you don't feel like you're going to die or pass out lol. I've found that sticking to a program works great for me. All you need is a stopwatch. Tomorrow I will be running 2 miles without walking, yay! I do it 4 mornings a week before work and I start the day with so much more energy. I plan to build up to running 4 or 5 miles a day for 45 min of cardio. C25k only takes about 30 minutes.

  • COkristi You have only been doing it for 5 weeks and can run 2 miles?? I feel like I am dying when I only run for the 60 seconds.
  • Try with the podcast. There is music in the background so you kind of zone off. I've NEVER run and I've been able to do several of the intervals!
  • I tried listening to my IPod yesterday but that didn't help too much.
  • Have you tried slowing down? I was jogging painfully slow when I first started but I can definitely tell my endurance and speed have increased. My boss once told me when you feel like you're dying, don't stop jogging, just slow down.
