Getting in Shape

WW worth it?

Hello everyone!  I am debating about whether I should join Weight Watchers.  The thing is, I've been dieting for a while with Slim Fast.  Its been great and has enabled me to lose quite a bit of weight, but I am down to the last 5 or 10 lbs (I can't decide!) and the scale has seemed to stop.  I am aiming to drop 10 more pounds to hit 130, but more importantly I want to drop it and keep it off.  I am wanting to take my trumpet dress in December to be altered to a mermaid fit (hopefully, and if it looks good, obviously), the back is so low that any body shaper underneath is out of the question and I really don't want to wear one, and I don't want the current weight loss to just be part of the yo-yo pattern I've experienced for years.  I want to be at the perfect size for me by December and not gain or lose anymore weight because of the dress and for myself.  I know how to lose weight, but I'm not sure about maintaining weight.  Would WW be a good investment?  Also, does anyone have any workouts that they would recommend?  I'd really like some really good cardio since the fiance and I already do some weight training and I don't want to bulk up, although toning would be nice.  My main problem areas, too, are my hips and thighs.

Re: WW worth it?

  • My Mom has lost about 60-70 pounds on WW and kept it off for about 3 years so far.  She would say it is worth it, but this is why.  She likes attending meetings and learning from the WW leaders.  The accountability factor is also a great reason for her to do WW.  She is a lifetime member and has reached her goal weight so as long as she maintains the weight loss and weighs in at least once a month, WW is free for her.  There are a lot of WW ladies on this board so they will have better suggestions for you, but I think it works for my mom because of what she learns and it keeps her accountable.

  • Sorry - I did not answer your other question.  I've had good results with interval training on the treadmill and Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred.  Both have helped me to tone.  The following site has some interesting tips too. http://www.nowloss.com/weight-loss-plan-to-lose-your-last-10-pounds.htm

  • I think WW would be great.. but you might want to check with your local WW. I know it says online that you cant sign up for the monthly pass if you are 5lbs or less from your recomended weight.. but I dunno what they consider the recomended weight. As for toning.. I like the biggest loser bootcamp.. and I have noticed a big difference in my thighs with that workout.. and even if you dont notice it right away.. you will feel it after the first workout..

  • I just joined WW a little over a month ago and I think it's great!  It really makes me think about what I am putting in my mouth and I really do make better choices.  Having to weigh in every week holds me accountable when I want to take the week off from working out.  Plus, I can only cheat once in a while if I want to get this weight AND keep it off!  I would highly recommend it!
  • I'm taking my second run at WW (major flopped the first time), and I love it. I hate to say this because it sounds so negative... but think about what you see yourself doing the rest of your life. Do you really plan on doing Slim Fast forever? And if the answer is no... then will your eating habits actually have changed after you stop doing the Slim Fast thing? I'm guessing it's a no (at least that was the case for me).WW is not a diet, it's a lifestyle change, and I think that's the most important part of keeping the weight off. There are a lot of diets out there that work (incl. Slim Fast), but with almost all of them, you gain some or all of the weight back after you stop using their food/pills. WW isn't like that. I think you should try it and see how it goes.

  • Hi wbiggs, I joined ww about 6 weeks ago and I do like it. I have had good results. WW has an awesome program for maintenance! My friend at work started the ww at work program for us and needed people to join to get the alloted number of folks to be able to have the program at work. It is kind of expensive when there are many sites on the net for free, like Spark People, and many more. I have been doing alli weight loss program before that, and I did see results with that as well. I have had no problems with 'treatment effects' which is what scares people away from alli. Been on it since May 10th. Regarding weight lifting and bulking up: Women cannot bulk up like men because we don't have the hormones to do so. It would take an incredible amout of lifting heavy weights and eating perfectly to bulk up. It takes body builders an incredible amount of time and effort to bulk up and look like they do, so don't worry a bit about bulking up. If you lift, you will tone well if done correctly, but not bulk up. I did the Body for Life program for about 6 months last year and I lost sizes very fast. Not too much weight because I was building muscle and losing fat. I only lost 9 lbs. but went down 2 sizes FAST! (and I followed their eating plan) www.bodyforlife.com Of course I fell off the wagon and gained it back plus 5 more lbs. You have to stick with the program, and I didn't. I am doing lifting now, WW, alli, and I just ordered the FIRM Body Sculpting System, which is intervals of lifting and cardio. I am looking for the most efficient way to lose weight, tone up and interval training is it for me. I am really motivated and have about 20 lbs to lose to get to my perfect weight. BUT.... I am now a size 10 and if I get to a 6, I don't care what I weigh. I am 5'1''. (I was a tight 12, SCARY) I hope that helps, I wish you the very best, and congrats on being just 10 pounds away from your goal.
  • I love WW.  I have lost over 50 pounds and I honestly don't feel deprived or restricted.  I think the accountability part of it is what keeps me going.  Like pp said, I could do ww for the rest of my life because its a healthy but easy lifestyle.  I could never do the slim fast thing long term.  I say try it for a month or two and see how you like it.  I personally am a online member and I love the being able to track my points, look up points of food, get recipes and get support from the message boards all online.
  • Sorry if any of this was mentioned because I didn't read the other responses...You need to find a healthy eating plan you can LIVE with- Slimfast is not the answer. If you can't see yourself eating this way for the rest of your life, than it is not the plan for you. That being said, WW teaches you about portions, and balancing healthy food with other food you really enjoy. I have been on it for a little over a year and I have lost 30 lbs. Although my weightloss has been slow, I am keeping with it and not looking back. Every time I've lost weight on my own, the longest I've stuck with it is 5 months, only to gain it back again. My ultimate goal is to be healthy.Considering you say you know how to lose weight, but not have to maintain the loss, it sounds like you are crash dieting, only to return to old habits. WW will teach you new habits and will give you a plan you can stick with. WELL WORTH IT!
