Getting in Shape

how often do you weigh yourself?

I recently went out a bought a scale, something Ive been too afraid to do for a long time, so I can track my weight loss. Now, Im going crazy stepping on the damn thing every time I walk past it and its making me quite upset. I'll gain like 5 pounds in an hour sometimes just from what I eat and drink then I'll wake up feelin all extra slender like I usually do in the morning and Ill step on the scale and actually be like 2 pounds more than the night before, its really killing my confidence being that Im working out and eating healthy and these numbers keep going up. Ive only had the scale for 2 days and have since started on my TOM so I know theres a lot of factors here but damn is it discouraging. Is there a sensible, mentally healthy time to weigh yourself? Is there a certain time of day to get the best results? thanks

Re: how often do you weigh yourself?

  • The best thing to do is weigh yourself at the same time every day.  I don't really mean EVERY day, but maybe every other day or pick 2 days out of the week.  Your weight will flucuate 1-5 pounds thoughout the day, and all you'll do is psych yourself out!  There was one person on here who made her Significant Other hide the scale from her, and he would bring it out once or twice a week at a certain time during the day and those were the only times she could weigh herself!  When I first started I was like you, constantly checking.  But after a bunch of let downs, I decided I would only do it in the morning after I went to the bathroom.  When I was constantly checking I felt like I wasn't going anywhere, but once I stopped doing that the numbers slowly began to drop!  Now that i think of it, I actually haven't weighed myself in 4 days!  I hope this helps, and good luck!
  • It is so hard not to keep checking. I would seriously get onto it everytime I saw it. So i packed it away and just weigh myself once a week at my gym, in the morning. If you are working out and doing weights to, it will take a little bit of time to see that number change because you are adding muscle as you are getting rid of fat. And the old standby, muscle weighs more than fat. Look at your figure, not the number on the scale. A way better boost is to give yourself measurements every 2-3 weeks. That way you won't get as discouraged by water weight or having a few extra pounds around your period. Hope it helps and good luck!
  • You should weigh in the morning right when you wake up. It's most consistent since your tummy would be the emptiest and the scale would be less effected by what you just ate or drank. Also, I was told to weigh-in only like 2x a week. Oh and if you decide to give yourself a cheat meal...DO NOT WEIGH YOURSELF THE DAY AFTER! You'll get psyched out by water weight from the cheat meal.
  • Every day, right after I wake up and go potty.
  • i have the scale in the bathroom so it's tempting. I try to weight myself just once a week- on my scheduled ww weigh in day but sometimes i succumb to my curiousity and weigh myself a few other times during the week. hiding the scale is such a good trick! i never thought of that. another idea is to use measurements of arms, thighs, hips, tummy, to determine weight loss/toning, etc. good luck!
  • I try to stay focused on the inches, and how my clothes fit, but do weigh in a couple of times per week. I was finally able to wear a bra that was way to small for me a month ago, yahooooo....... and a pair of pants were falling down on my waist this last week too... YEA!!!!! My ww weigh in is at the end of the day when I am full of water and 5 little meals, so I always weigh in on that morning after my morning pee. There is a 2-3 lb difference. It is irritating, but you have to realize that water and liquids are very heavy. A gallon of water weighs 8 lbs. best of luck to you, I'd say for your own sanity, try for once a week weigh in. And don't forget to measure your waist, hips, bust, thigh, and arm, once a week. That is for your sanity when the scale doesn't move.
  • Exactly what everyone else is saying is right, in the morning after peeing is the best time to weigh yourself. I would only do it once or twice a week. Healthy weight loss is only 2-3 lbs a week. So don't get discouraged for not losing 8 lbs in a week. Just remember to eat 5 small meals a day and drink LOTS of water. I know I get a little obsessive about the scale too, but just like the others said I try to pay attention to how things are fitting not the numbers. The numbers really are just that, numbers.

  • I joined weight watchers 2 months ago and i weigh myself everyday, and at the same time. I like to make sure that i'm not losing too fast and not gaining, so this keeps me on track.
