Getting in Shape

issues loosing weight... grrr..

Ok I have dislocated knee caps and now I am like 100 pounds over weight. I need or at least want to lose like 50 to 75 pounds in a year. I have a while I know but its been six months since I got engaged and I have lost only about 2 or 3 pounds 5 max. I hate it. I cant do the usual weight loss things like walking or jogging or pushups things like that hurt my knees. I have been streching in the mornings sitting down and streching my legs and arms. But its not enough. I have cut my portions in half in what I eat. I cant find anything that works. I live in an apartment too so the pool closes at nine right when I get off work. and opens at 8 and I leave for work at like ten. So this isnt working out for me. I am asking for any tips anyone can give me. Thanks guys.

  • Try tracking your calories with a free site like Sparkpeople.com or TheDailyPlate.com That should help!

    IMO -
    a)  the pool opens at 8am but you don't leave until 10am?  I see an opportunity there.  b)  It's all about diet.  I've seen a lot of girls on here on weight watchers.  I think that is truly the only 'diet' that that works because it teaches you a real life way to eat.  The staff keeps you motivated.  Something that always sticks in my head from WW is the BLT's that add up over the day.  BLT = bites, licks and tastes.  I swear I could eat an extra 500-600 calories and not even realize I'm doing it.

The first step is deciding that you want to change and you will not fail no matter what it takes.  The second step is actually doing it.  every single day counts.  Get yourself a trainer for a month to work on a custom made workout plan for your knees.  I bet you could do more weight training with hurt knees than you every thought possible.

  • you can do it!

I suggest swimming-- even if you can only fit in 30-45 minutes a day before work. My mom went through ankle and knee surgery and it was the only exercise she could do for awhile. Recently the dr has started to let her use a recumbent bike, maybe you could try that too and see how it feels on your knees.

    good luck! :)

    Check out this book: http://www.bulletproofknees.com/

It may help you strenghen things up and help with the pain.

Weight loss is about 80% diet.  As others have suggested, check out MyPlate on Livestrong.com (free) or Weight Watchers.

  • i thought i was eating better before i started actually tracking what i ate. writing every bite.

if you have a smart phone check for "calorie counter by fatsecret" in the app market. you can scan barcodes of foods with the phones camera and it imputs the food in your tracker. (you can also search for things without barcodes, and manually enter foods) you can easily search for a restraunt also and see the nutrition info in some meals before you go so you know ahead of time the healthiest choices. the app syncs with fatsecret.com which is a great online resource of friends and foods there is a forum section like here also. (i think its similar to sparkpeople) you can also use the site without the smart phone.

i agree about the swimming in the morning. or you can check into a membership at a 24 hour gym so you can go after work. but that is an added cost you can avoid by getting up and using the pool right away. its no harder to dry off and get dressed for work after a swim than it is to dry off and get dressed after a shower.

  • Cutting your portions in half is a good first step but I agree with pp's that recommended actually tracking your intake.  It's eye-opening!  For me, I always thought I already ate a lot of fruits and veggies but each day it's almost like a competition with myself to see if I can hit all my intake macronutrient goals.  It's hard!

It's great to cut portions but to really be sucessful losing weight long-term, you have to actually evaluate what it is that you're eating.
