Getting in Shape

Currently a size 11 and ordered my dress in size 8 (American size 6)!

I ordered my Pronovias Barcelona dress in size 8, but everybody's been saying that I should have ordered a size 10! I'm currently a size 10/11, but when I tried the Pronovias 10 in the store, it was a bit tight. I ordered it in 8 because I'm planning on losing 20 pounds for my wedding, and I've already lost about 15 lbs. in two months. The wedding's in April so I think I have time, but my family won't get off my back about the dress size. They're afraid the stress of the wedding will inevitably make me gain weight. I'm confident I can lose the weight, and keep it off.

Are any of you guys in a similiar situation? Laughing

  • I bought the size I needed for the dress but I wanted to go down a size because I wanted to lose ten pounds for the wedding. The seamstress who was there advised me not to just because it is harder to let out a dress then take it in, just in case I didn't make my goal. Which I did! But it sounds like you've almost reached the goal of 20 pounds, so I don't think you have anything to worry about! Congrats!!
  • I can understand where your family is coming from. I was told they can alter my dress 2 sizes in either direction, it's not lace, but its still not a simple cut and sew job. I am a firm believer in ordering your own size. Not to scare you, but my friend did this, just went in for her fitting, hysterically cried because they couldn't zip the dress and there wasn't enough time to alter it, and just bought a new dress. I would see if you could get it in your size.

  • Well, generally sample dresses are larger than the same dress new, since they've been tried on a bunch of times and stretch out a bit, so if it was snug when you tried it on, that same size would probably be too small when it arrived (assuming you stayed the same).

Your post is a big confusing.  I'm not sure if the 15lbs you've lost so far counts towards your goal of 20 to lose, of it that 20 is on top of the 15 you've already lost.

That being said, if you still need/want to lost 20 lbs, that's definitely achieveable in 8 months.  You just have to strict with what you do.

You're also probably better off keeping track of inches than pounds, since for the dress to fit, it's really the inches that matter.  You can probably look up the size chart for the designer online.

  • I did exactly the same thing but have also been super motivated by it and am 100% confident that my dress will not have to be altered in either direction, just hemmed and bustled.  You have plenty of time.  I think you will be fine!

  • It's definitely possible, I bought a sample that was 2 sizes smaller than I was at the time, and I've been able to get it to fit well, with a LOT of hard work. If you really keep your diet in check (I am meticulous about counting calories) and also do a mix of strength and cardio training, you should be able to reach your goal. Obviously, the sooner your dress fits the better, then when your wedding stress kicks in you just have to focus on maintaining your weight. Good luck!

  • Last time I lost 50 lbs... I didn't even go down one full pant size.  I would be scared.  I order my dress in a size that was a bit snug in the store in the waist only (where I lose all my weight) knowing that I could always take it in if my weight loss plan (back on South Beach) was uber successful.
  • Here's the deal. You've got plenty of time. If you want to lose weight, then you will.

You can tell if you're on track. You know where you need to be when. If you can be discplined, then you totally can.

I ordered one size smaller in my dress because it holds me accountable. I won't fit in it right now, and there is no messing around.  But I'm also clear I don't want to be forever immortalized in pictures at this weight.
  • Bad idea, trust me.  It's much better to alter down than to let out a dress.  Your family absolutely has a point.  And as a PP pointed out, many brides who did the same have been left with no option but to find another dress at the last minute, which they may not be nearly as happy with.  I would see if you can still order it in your size.  Being held accountable with a smaller dress size has nothing to do with it- sometimes your body just won't give up the weight.

  • I ordered my dress in the size that fit, but it's a little snug in the hips (according to the consultant, I think it felt fine). I want to lose weight for the wedding, but I would never order a dress size too small.
  • This is a horrible idea.  Yes, you probably CAN lose the weight but why put even more stress on yourself than you already have from planning a wedding?!?  The designer should have a size chart.  Look at that and see what your measurements have to be.  Take your measurements and see how far you have to go.  GOOD LUCK!

  • If there's nothing you can do to change the size of the dress you ordered to the next one up, it will definitely keep you very motivated!!  The only thing that would make me nervous is since I ordered my dress in April, I lost 22 pounds and my dress that I ordered (in my size) still fits.  It's a little bigger in a couple areas, but I wouldn't order a size smaller.  It all depends on where you lose the weight and how your dress fits.  I lost all mine in my face, bust (darn it!), and other areas that don't affect as much the size of my dress.  Best of luck though, you can do it!
  • When I tried my dress on in the shop it was snug in my hips so the consultant suggested that I order one size up because it would be easier to take in than let out so I ordered the bigger size.  When my dress came in it fit perfectly everywhere but was snug in the waist!!  I couldn't beleive it, it was a bigger size than the sample dress but was snug.  I since lost 20 lbs and the dress now fits me perfectly except still big in the bust.  Just be careful, like previously mentioned, the floor sample will always be bigger b/c it gets stretched out.  I lost 20 loubs and my dress now fits be perfectly and I ordered the bigger size.  Just stay focused and if need be work out with a personal trainer so that they can help you focus.  Best of luck!

  • You can always always always take a dress in but it is very difficult to take a dress out. I get that you are motivated but that doesnt mean it is going to work out.

Are you sure?  I heard that dresses can usually be let out one size.
