Getting in Shape

Work all day!

Hi Gals! I make a point to eat well, get my fruits and vegetables, protein, no fast food... I work an 8-5 desk job and was wondering if anyone had any tips for sneaking "work outs" into the day? I cant take the stairs, those are emergency purposes only, and I do get out and walk at lunch... any other suggestions? The diet alone isn't helping me see results and i'm exactly 4.5 months from my date!!!

Thank you!!!

I'll sometimes do lunges or jumping jacks in the bathroom. And pray no one walks in. :-)

I also like to get up from my desk and walk to whoever I need to talk to's desk instead of calling or emailing them. And whenever I get the chance to stand, I take it. It's not much, but I figure every little bit helps!

  • I do leg lifts in my cube!  There's lots of websites where people have come up with some helpful things.  Most often, I hear about people replacing their desk chair with a yoga ball to strengthen their core during the day.  You could also bring in an elastic band and do some great stretches while still at your desk.

  • I used to do jumping jacks or run in place while I was waiting for things to print at the copier.  I would also take my ipod and do jumping jacks/butt kicks/high knees/squats on my breaks.  Is it possible to ride your bike to and from work?
  • I stand while working (I do have an exercise ball when I feel like sitting), do random push-ups and squats in my office, and have walking meetings.
  • I'm lucky, we have a lunch room that no one is in before 12:00pm.  On my 15 min morning break, I go in there and I have a dumbbell in my locker.  I'll admit, if I know no one will miss me I do 30 mins!  Each day I do a focus area, on a 3 day rotation.  Arms and chest, core, then legs.  The dumbbell is almost too heavy for me to lift, so the shorter amount of time is more effective.  I've also started getting up earlier and walking to work then home again.  It's 40 mins each way.
  • Thank you ladies! I'll give these a try... Unfortunately biking to work wont work, it's just too far, but I definitly could do jumping jacks and stuff in the bathroom! Every liitle bit helps!!!
  • I guess I don't understand why you're focusing on doing things at work. Why don't you get a real workout in before or after work? That way you don't have to worry about looking silly, and you are working out more than a few minutes at a time.

  • @arwo,  I am doing a normal workout after work, I just am tired of sitting alll day at my desk and was looking for ways to supplement what I'm already doing, amp up the routine a bit...
  • ahh I love this thread. I completely understand. I took my current job almost a year ago and I love it but the job I was at before I was able to fit in an hour to and hour and a half gym session before work, then i biked to work and home from work, and I was so busy at work that I was constantly moving and really only hald time to pick at grapes or carry a smoothie. My current position I took on a rai$e which is lovely but im here much earlier, plus i have an hour drive commute and its a desk job so I just sit all day.

My wedding day is in like 3.5 months and I have gained 10 pounds at this job. my FI just doesn't understand my concern in the way I look so it's frustrating not having that support (he thinks he being supportive by telling me I look fine the way I am--well, its just not want i want to hear).

anyways, I try and fit in jumping jacks and running in place and I also have a dumbell in my office. Unfortunately, I dont get much of a lunch time to go walk and there is no staircase here... I need SOMETHING to give me the energy to go to the gym after work :/
  • Thats the problem I was having! I would get home and be sooo exhausted I would flop down on the couch and that was it! Yesterday I used the counter in the break room and did some standing pushups and tricep dips, did leg lifts in my desk chair etc.... I left my gym bag on the seat of my car so it was the first thing I saw, and drove myself to the gym right after work...
