Getting in Shape

Anyone interested in training for a half marathon this summer?

Does anyone want to do a 10 week half marathon training program with me this summer? I'm thinking of using this training schedule: http://www.marathonrookie.com/half-marathon-training.html. It seems very manageable and my friend just used that site's marathon guide and successfully completed a full marathon.

We could all try to start the program around the same time and post our accountability and tons of support and tips! The schedule assumes that before beginning you can run for 30 minutes without stopping and have been running for at least 4 weeks.  The extremely gradual build-up will be great for avoiding injury and building confidence.

I was thinking of starting the week before Memorial Day and finishing with a Chicago half marathon on August 1st.  My wedding is August 28th, so any August brides that want to push to be in tip-top shape, do this with me!!!  There are a ton of half marathons across the country in August so you shouldn't have trouble finding one to rock.

Ok so I'm done rambling.  Does anyone want to do this with me??? It's really not as daunting as it sounds and you can be outside all summer and bond with other bride runners.

  • Congrats on deciding to do a half!  It's my favorite distance.  Long enough that you can run it at a comfortable speed and talk to the people around you, but short enough that it doesn't take a month to recover from.  And I love that you're obviously so excited about this!

I won't be doing another half until maybe September, so I probably won't start training until July, but I'll look forward to reading (and possibly commenting) on your posts in the mean time!

  • I will consider it! I've been looking at doing a half marathon in October, the weekend after my wedding. I'm nervous because I don't do outdoor running yet, so that's the next thing I need to work on. But I'll try to keep up with the training.

  • I may be interested in doing this with you.  I'm going to see if I can find any half marathons around here that would fit into my schedule.

This could be a problem though.  I will be gone from July 1-18 and won't be able to really train since we will be in Italy on our honeymoon.  I currently run 6+ miles several days a week so I wouldn't be starting from scratch with training.  Let me think about it....
  • I had some knee issues in January. Let me re-do C25K and see how I hold up first. I will let you know after.
  • Good luck with each of your goals! For those of you that want to follow I'll probably start posting about it on the daily accountability later this month and also post seperate updates every now and then.  SummerBoston, you could probably train for it in way less time (I'm just using a super slow schedule because I had injury problems earlier this year).  If you found a half marathon later in August you could probably start training post honeymoon... Thanks for the support everyone!
  • I will do it!  I am running the VA Beach half on labor day weekend and desperately need motivation to train!

  • Sweet!!! Take a look at the schedule and see when you think you'd want to start it. Like I said, I won't be starting for another 2 weeks for mine.  If you move the training to the dates that correspond to your half marathon, your longest pre-race run will be the day of my wedding! I'll post encouragement from the altar!

I am going on vacation the week that I would need to start so I will probably start my first week around May 17th and then do a few maintenance runs the following week while I'm on vaca and start week 2 on Memorial Day. So look for stuff on the board around Memorial Day and let me know what your running schedule will be like and I will cheer you on!
  • Katie 312- Are you running the Rock n Roll 1/2????? I will be there too!!! My training plan starts next week and I'll be using Hal Higdon's 1/2 marathon training plan.  I was going to sign up with one of the Chicago running clubs but it's too expensive and I feel like I have something going on every weekend that I would end up missing a lot of sessions, so I've decided to just try it out on my own.

  • I'm totally in!

@CMW- where in VA do you live?! I really want to do the half marathon in the fall in VA Beach as well. I'm desperately in need of motivation too! Especially with this crazy hot weather!

  • I just ran my first half in March and it was a GREAT way to jump start my fitness for my September wedding. I used the same training schedule that you mentioned and it was very managable. Good luck and let us know how you are doing!
  • I'm still debating whether or not I want to do the rock n roll half in August, I'm actually doing the half in Madison over Memorial weekend and I'm up to 11 miles this week! That's so crazy to say, I never thought I could run that far. My training schedule was very similiar to the one you posted and it has worked very well for me. I'm going to follow along in case I want to jump on the bandwagon a few weeks after the half I'm doing on Memorial wknd!
  • Just a friendly FYI, I know a bunch of people who have run the rock n roll in VA beach... I offer y'all a warning that it is always HOT.  You won't get a PR in that race!  That said, everyone I know still recommends it (and several have told me it's their favorite half!) just be prepared to adjust your goal times.

Where do all the VA people live?  I'm in Charlottesville right now, about to move to Richmond... we should totally have a knottie runner meet up sometime if anyone is close!
  • MLC84, I am running the rock n roll 1/2! It probably won't be as hot as the VA beach one but I'm very happy that the start time is 6:30am so we can be finished well before 9am. It's great to see so many interested and supportive ladies! I will post in a few weeks when I start!
  • I think that I may do a half marathon but the best one I could find local to me is in October so I think you girls will be way ahead of me on your training schedule.  I will be here to support you all though!
  • @Laura themidwife,  sorry its taken me forev to get back to you--I always forget to check back on posts!  I'm in Charlottesville, what about you? I've been slacking bad though and haven't kept up the mileage I'm supposed to.  I teach and school ends this week, so starting next week I have NO excuses!!! :)
