Getting in Shape

New to the boards

I have been reading through the posts-Holy Cow-lots of info! I am getting married on July 2, 2011 and really need to get my butt in shape! I just need a big kick in the butt! My mom and I are going wedding dress shopping and I am hoping that is the motivation I need. I am a member of a gym, but not a huge fan of going. I am not in great shape right now and am wondering where to start. My FI is a big meat and potato man so I really try to watch my breakfast and lunch, so we can enjoy a meal together at night. Anyway, I guess I am just looking for a post to join for the daily accountability and such. I love reading everyones thoughts and ideas. Where is the best place for me?

Re: New to the boards

  • Welcome! Just a question  - do you just not like going to the gym in general or do you not like your gym? :)

  • I don't mind the gym-it is a YMCA, but I just can't get myself motivated to go after work. I teach school so cannot get there until 4:30 or 5:00, when it is packed! I just need to get into a routine I  think.
  • I totally feel you, I am a member at LA fitness. I just got a personal trainer for the extra push. My fiancé and I are looking at August of 2011. So yeah, I need to haul ass and get in shape.

It is really hard to go after work (that's what I have to do too or else I'd have to be at the gym at 5 am - no thanks!) but you've got to just tell yourself you're gonna do it! I have a permanent sticky note on my computer that says "January 8th is just around the corner! Get your butt to the gym today!" and that helps me.

  • I have recently joined a gym as well. I have been trying for months to lose 15-20lbs and so far have really only been able to tighten my legs! I joined a gym called Bodyplex where I am and have started attending RPM classes, its pretty much spin class on crack! LOL! But it is great! Last night I was there for class and wanted to stop so bad, but I just kept telling myself that every turn on the bike was a little bit more off the waistline, and how much better I will look in my dress in April if I keep it up! :) You can do it! :)

  • Thanks ladies! I really think a little extra motivation from people in the same boat will help. The teachers I work with are a great support system as well, but a little extra boost is always welcome! :)

On another note good luck with wedding dress shopping!  It is such a fun experience.  I went for months and months trying to find the perfect dress and I found it.  Aurelie by Maggie Sottero.  Phenomonal.

Regarding the gym, you are SUPER lucky to have a gym membership!  If I had one, I would use it!  You are paying that money so you better be taking advantage of it.  I am not as fortunate.  We cannot afford a gym membership so I use DVD's to work out, or On Demand. or walk outdoors.

Where to start you ask?  I would start with some brisk walking outdoors while you have the nice weather this Fall.  It will relax you.  Jumping into a video or an on demand program might overwhelm you or tire you out.. or make you not want to exercise.  The gym is also not always a good place to start because it can sometimes to too overwhelming to decide where to start.

I would say first do some walking because it will get your joints and body moving and grooving and you can also let your mind relax and look at all the scenery and the leaves and feel the cool crisp air and just be one with nature.  It is very relaxing.

Then eventually in a week or so you can venture off to the gym and start with some cardio like stair climbers, treadmill or elliptical.   Eventually you can break off into different and new things like kickboxing.  I started in June through August with soley walking and jogging and the occasional bout of sprints mixed in.  I would start with a mile or 2 and eventually do a 4 mile Walk/Jog.

In September is when I started up with the videos and bought Jillian Michael's DVD.  It was a little harder then I thought, but I did the video to finish it.. and then after that decided I need to look On Demand for something more simple, basic and easier and eventually I did work up to doing more of the Jillian Video with much more ease.  Within the month from Sept to Oct I have worked my strengh up and my energy and how intense I can handle.

I now do 40 minute Power Walking almost everyday (A video on demand, and I have the Dvd and I usually finish it off with 20-30 more minutes of another cardio usually Kickboxing.  If I had more time I would do a 90- 2 hour work out because I love working out so much now.  I find it to be a fun way for my body and mind to feel better.

Sorry for so long again, but I hope to stick around the boards esp the daily accountability board to see what we are all eating and what we are doing for exercise daily.  Most of us on there are really increasing how much we can handle and you will see a lot of people are working out EVERYDAY even if one or 2 of the days is a simple 30 minute walk or 20 minutes of arms.  We do something 5-7 days of the week.  The more intense stuff you can do on the weekends when you have the time, but follow the board and see that its recommened to do something active every day of the week.

You have to jump into it and just do it cold turkey.  GO GO GO.

Sorry I am in a great mood bc its H Birthday and we are going out to dinner, something I haven't done in months.  A real nice restaurant too where we got engaged!

Good luck and we hope to see you back!

  • Welcome!

Most days I don't really want to go to the gym after work, but I tell myself that it's non-negotiable.  As one of my favourite bloggers put it, going to the gym is like cleaning out the cat litter.  I might not want to do it, but if I don't, bad things will happen.  If I don't go to the gym, I'll get flabby, if I don't clean out the cat litter, the cats will poop in my shoes.

  • Instead of dreading going to the "gym" why don't you find a cardio related activity that you actually enjoy?

Its true, you will need to incorporate weights into your routine as you have to tone.  But instead of wasting away on the treadmill for 45minutes, why not spend that time doing something you like?  All it takes is 45-60minutes of an activity that keeps your heart rate up and makes you sweat.  Do you like sports? Hiking? Dancing?  You will have more success and be able to stick to your program if you have fun doing the activity rather than dreading it.

  • I'm late to this game, but...

FI doesn't like going to the gym.  He goes b/c if he doesn't I'll make him do the Biggest Loser DVD with me at home.  He hates Jillian Michaels, so for him going to the gym the the lesser of 2 evils.

On the other hand, the gym is something I absolutely will not do, and I prefer to deal with Jillian yelling at me through the tv.  Find something that you can personally tolerate.
