Getting in Shape

13.1 Miles = 6 Months Away

6 Months from today I'll be running in my first half marathon - The Detroit Free Press (half) Marathon... I first wanted to do a run that was for a good cause or something, but I'm selfish and running this one because you run in two countries in one day (U.S. and Canada) and that just seems silly to me.

Anyway, the farthest I've ever ran in my entire life is 5 miles so I still have a lot of training to do but I just wanted to see if anyone else is training for their first run (5K, 10K, 1/2 Marathon, Full Marathon, etc...)??

Re: 13.1 Miles = 6 Months Away

  • My first full marathon is in 6months!!  I've done a half marathon and while training for it I never ran more than 5 miles (oops!) I didn't stay on track with my training!  But I finished in 2 hours 25 min.  which wasn't so bad in my opinion!  Congrats on training for your first half!  You'll do great!

  • Thanks! I've walked 13-14 miles in 4 hours before (I just wanted to see how long it would take....) so I'm hoping to get any time under 3 hours for the actual race. Congrats and good luck on your full marathon training! [:

  • I did my first half in feb. in Austin. Decided after years of running that it was time to give myself a serious challenge and a challenge it was (Austin is all hills). I managed to finish in 2:30 with an injury at the 6. Unfort. I won't be able to start up again until mid may and slowly at that.

    Good luck! Have Fun!

Thanks Holi -- and oh my, Austin IS full of hills. I lived in San Antonio back in the fall for 4 months and I was able to watch the Rock N Roll Marathon that really helped motivate me to sign up for a race [:

I hope you feel better sooooon!

  • My first half is in um... 6 weeks?  It's memorial day weekend.  I'm training for it with a 10 week program.  I'd been consistently doing 3, so now I'm just adding on.  I did my first 8 miler on Saturday and so far it's been going really well.  10 miles this Saturday!
  • I ran the DIsney Princess Half Marathon a few months ago.  For anyone looking for a good first one, it was excellent!  It was 95% women, so a lot less pressure than some.  They had Disney characters along the course, and it really kept your mind off the pain.

Prior to this I'd run two in Atlanta and one in Titusville, FL.  The one in Titusville was parallel to the ocean and very calm and serene- definitely a completely different run.

Good luck with your training! My biggest advice is never try something new on race day.  I.e, don't get new shorts and make that the first day you wear them, don't try new energy bars that day, etc.
