Getting in Shape

Daily workouts?

Is it ok to do some sort of workout daily? Or do you need to give yourself some rest? I know you shouldn't lift weights daily, but what about cardio?

Re: Daily workouts?

  • Def. need to give yourself some rest. I know for any sort of weight training you need to rest those muscles the next day. So if you go to the gym and do weight, do your legs Monday, Wed. and Fri and your arms the alternate days. I've heard you should do some sort of cardio everyday.. but then I've heard 5 days a week. I started going to the gym 3 months ago and worked out full cardio for an hour plus weights 6 days a week. The last few weeks I haven't been able to get to my gym as much so I go 2-3 days a week and I walk a lot for my work. I'd say if you can go for a good walk for the better part of the week it helps :)
  • You can do some form of casrdio everyday, but I wouldn't do the same kind of cardio everyday. I run six days per week most weeks, and then try to do something else (even if it's just cleaning the apartment) on the other day. Cleaning isn't quite cardio, but at least it's moving.
  • Definitely rest between strength training the same body part (so if you do arms on Mon, wait until at least Wed). The one body part you could train everyday is abs. As far as cardio, I wouldn't do high intensity cardio every single day, but I often find myself doing light activity on "rest" days like a bike ride or walk. That's perfectly fine as long as you're not super sore.

  • (Ooops, I agree that you shouldn't do "hard" cardio two days in a row. At most I do speedwork twice per week, with one "moderate" day, with an easy day between each.)
  • Physical activity daily is important but you don't have to go and push yourself 110% everyday or else you'll burn out (and possibly injure yourself)

Like PPs said... change it up and you'll be fine. [:

I respectfully disagree about training your abs every day--they are just like any other muscle and so they need rest as well. Typically, my abs look best after I've given them a little bit of rest.

As far as cardio, the amount of rest you need depends on what you're doing. A little "active" rest, like walking, is great on "off" days. What it comes down to, really, is just listening to your body. If you're feeling burned out, take a break!
  • I work a lot but I always take one day of complete rest. Your body needs the recovery time and then you have envergy for the next 6 days. I started doing cardio twice a day now to really up it and weights 5 days.
  • 30 minutes of cardio (thats having an increased heart rate for 30 minutes) is really all one needs combined with eating healthy to really help stay in shape. If you work your upper body one day, work your lower body the next and continue on in that fashion. The thing with working your abs is that typically no matter what you are doing, you are always going to be working your abs if you are working out properly. When running you should hold your core tight, same goes for when you are doing planks or push-ups your abs should also be held tight. So taking a day off from abs can be hard when working out 5-6 days a week.
