Getting in Shape

Embarking on my weight loss journey today

Hello ladies! This past weekend I tried on dresses & found the one, and now I am trying to lose 40 lbs before I order it in December. It's a lofty goal but one I hope to accomplish! I wanted to know if any of you were using a website like fitday.com or had a recommendation to track food, exercise, and progress. I am going to my old college to sign up for a membership to their rec center to start a workout regime, which is so going to suck for me because I hate exercise but I am wanting to learn how to love it! I look forward to any suggestions & wish you all luck on your healthy journeys!

  • I liked Sparkpeople when I first started out for tracking everything. Not sure if you have an iPhone and I think there's actually a website called Loseit! that I love right now. I've never done WW but I know a few ladies on here have had some great success with it.

Congrats on your decision too, sounds like you are on the right track!

  • Good luck!  I've lost 10 pounds since December by only doing a few small things:
1 - Cutting desert at lunch (this was hard - the cafeteria at work has amazing treats!)
    2 - Drinking more water
3 - Doing light exercise like walking, yoga, dance, and pilates.
    4 - Portion control!

Try doing exercise you enjoy, you'll be more likely to stick with it.  Or having a buddy that you meet once or twice a week at the gym can really help you stick to those appointments.

  • Does the rec offer group classes?  That is what got me into working out and keeps me motivated.  I am not the type of gym rat that can do elliptical, bike or treadmill.

Try a bunch of different types of classes.  My personal favs are anything bootcamp related (weights and cardio), yoga, Pilates and TurboKick (kickboxing).  I've ended up making gym friends and they help hold me accountable and push me each week.

Out of those I am working on the light exercise.  I did 40 minutes of a walk/jog  last night and 40 minutes today.

I don't have the option of dessert at my job.  I pack my lunch and we don't have any junk food in the office so I'm at an advantage.

We have a water cooler so I sometimes drink upwards of 64 oz of water a day plus some green tea as well and black tea in the morning.

Portion control is something I have mastered.  We really did cut back, my fiance and I.  And it not only cuts fat and calories. it also saves money.

I think if I can keep up the cardio (as this is my first week that I am really trying to stick with it, and so far I have) than I might be able to lose 10 lbs as well

h+d, I had a lot of success (lost 20 lbs) using MyPlate at Livestrong.com.  I found that Sparkpeople suggested too low a calorie range (for me).

As for exercising, I was never a fan of slogging away on a cardio machine for hours on end, and felt like I was just spinning my wheels using the machines.  I've really found my groove with the book/program New Rules of Lifting for Women.  It's a heavy lifting program that has me lifting 2-3 times a week.  I really love it.  I'm so much stronger and leaner than I was when I started.  While I haven't so much seen a drop in the number on the scale, I'm definitely losing inches and body fat.

  • I'd highly suggest Weight Watchers. It's helped me lose 48 lbs since September.
