Getting in Shape

Motivation...

I have none....

I lost an amazing job opportunity last week and ever since I have been feeding my feelings. I haven't gained weight on the scale YET, but I know it will creep up on me. I have a big of a muffin top, which is starting to bother me, but I can't seem to get motivated to either go to the gym or even start walking.

How do you motivate yourself?? I always seem to find an excuse: I'm too tired, too hungry, too full, too busy or it's too hot out..

I'm too tired:  a really good workout actually energizes me, especially yoga.  After the total relaxation (savasana) at the end of class, I am raring to go.  It makes for a more productive evening if I've just had a long work day.

I'm too hungry:  I plan my meals/snacks accordingly.  I keep bars around for last minute fill me ups (Luna protein or Kashi) in case I'm not filled up by other things.

I'm too full:  After gorging too much at dinner, which happens now and then, it actually feels nice to take a long walk with the FI.  It's summer so it stays light late enough to be able to do that.

I'm too busy:  I treat my gym and yoga studio time like appointments with myself that cannot be missed.  I'm committed to myself and it's making a difference.

It's too hot out:  It's ok to sweat, I sweat like a maniac.  That's what they made gym towels, showers and deoderant for.

If you want to lose weight, you have to stop making a ton of excuses for yourself.  Nothing feels as good as accomplishing a good workout to me.

  • ditto jen. what i try to do is really kick my own ass working out, then to try and remember what that feels like all day. it actually helps me with my diet too, because i tell myself, "i did not just ____ for all that time just to eat it right back with this junk."

work on this: when you feel an excuse forming in the back of your mind, recite an argument to it. like, "i don't want to run today, i'm pms-ing." instead, tell yourself, "exercise will ease cramps, fight bloat, and kick your bad mood." work hard to do this for about a week or two, and after a while, it'll be natural. your body will actually crave the activity! good luck :]

  • My fiance is the king of excuses!!! And I always tell him he has to WANT to do something to get it done. Even if it sucks you know you will happier when you do it, so just do it!

I tell myself that every morning when my alarm goes off at 6:20. I want to hit snooze, sometimes I even do. But then I GET UP! I walk for about an hour before I get ready for work. I feel so much better for the whole day!

MSange is right! I dont want to get up at 6:20 to walk just to eat crap and undo all that good work.

You can do it! No excuses!

  • I feel your pain! I was making a half assed effort to "get in shape" last year- aka, going to the gym really inconsistently after work like MAYBE 3 times a month, and eventually I just stopped going all together!

What really helped me was to just get into a routine, every morning up at 5:30 to hit the gym for 90 mins, no matter what! After the 2nd week it was actually easy! My body was used to getting up early and I felt so good afterwards that was enough motivation alone!

I think the summer is the best time to start an early workout routine, its much easier to get up when the sun is starting to rise and it's warm out. I figure if I get used to it now then it won't feel so terrible in the freezing dark winter mornings! haha!

  • haha! I woke up at 4:30 this morning to do the 30DS.  My motivation is my wedding dress.  It's got a dropped waist and its pretty form fitting.  When I'm running on the treadmill, I keep a picture up on my iphone with me in the dress and that keeps me running even when I want to stop.
