Getting in Shape

Pilates for weight loss?

I invested in a Pilates video in an attempt to get a leaner, more toned physique (not necessarily lose weight) by my wedding which is 1 month from now. Has anyone had experience with pilates and/or have any tips on how frequent I should to it to see results?

Re: Pilates for weight loss?

  • I actually do Pilates every morning Monday through Friday. I'm not going to lie, I am a skinny girl as is (5'7' 118 lbs) but I eat too many chips LOL. In about 6-8 weeks I had a '4 pack' and all I did was about 20 minutes a morning, 5 days a week. That's all I needed and I am so impressed with the results. I used Mari Winsor's Shape for Pink DVD and Denise Austin's "Best belly fat busters" they have mini work outs, 10 minutes each, so you can customize what you do everyday! I'd recommend doing more than I did since you only have one month. Good luck!!

  • I'm a group fitness instructor, so I know quite a bit about this.  Pilates is a great compliment to a weight loss/body toning program, but typically, it will not produce results on it's own...unless you are already pretty thin.  It won't burn fat, but it will help strengthen muscles under fat.  If you do cardio with it, you'll see results much faster. Good luck!
  • Pilates and Yoga are fantastic as a complement to cardio. You won't lose weight doing Pilates alone, though you may lose inches. But find a cardio routine you like. It's really crucial to your health and well-being.
  • I am a dancer and have been doing Pilates for a long time now. Pilates is amazing for your core and you will feel stronger and gain long lean muscle. I absolutely love Pilates. If you're not looking to lose weight it's a perfect fit for you! (but don't forget cardio too.. gotta get that heart rate up) :)
