Getting in Shape

Want to work out, but too sick.....

The last two months have been terrible! I just went on the pill, yes that pill, and the first month was okay, but made me sick and break out, then my period came early. My doctor switched me to a higher hormone pill for better cost, and now I'm even more sick! Nausea and vomitting not with standing, I've been bleeding almost all month, and now because of all the stomach acid, I have laryngitis! (I know that isn't about working out persay, but I needed to vent).

My wedding is in 54 days and I've felt so crummy the last two months, I can hardly do anything. I would normally be swimming daily at this point. But I'm affraid to even put on a suit. I want to get moving, so I can have energy and not go into the next few weeks in misery. I know my body is supposed to get used to the bc, but right now, I'm not there yet.

Any advice on how to keep my stomach settled so I workout? Or what I can do to make up for lost time in the next 50 days?

Re: Want to work out, but too sick.....

  • if you are that sick from the pill, maybe you should be on a different type of BC, one that you dont have to swallow. im on the nuva ring and i love it to death. keeps the periods in check and you dont have to remember it every single day.

otherwise, what about antacids or pepto bismol? could that help your stomach feel less crappy for at least a short time so you coudl work out? its not really a good solution as its not healthy to take those all the time either. I'd really talk to your doctor about switching BC since you really shouldnt be that sick, IMO.

If I was that sick from a bcp, I wouldn't be on it.

What does your doctor say about these symptoms?  Why did you go on the pill to begin with?  Did you want to prevent pregnancy or were your periods terrible to begin with?

There are so many different kinds of bcp out there and each person reacts to them differently.  I was on a dual pill for eight years that slowly eroded my appeitite so switched to a different dual pill.  For the next two years on the new dual pill, I suffered from horrible migraines.  I finally told the doctor and they swtiched me to a progestin only pill.  I feel like myself, have a healthy appetite, and the migraines are gone.

Seriously, explore more options with bcp.
  • It's simply for pregnancy, but I'm afraid of switching AGAIN, and finding the same results.

The antacids and pepto would be fine, if that didn't make me sick too. I already had a strong gag reflex.

I guess I'll just have to switch again. Several people have mention Nuvaring, but I wondered how easy it is to do. I won't do the patch, which I've heard is helpful for people who get sick from bc, but I can't stand things sticking to me with adhesive.

Thanks. Looks like I don't have much of a choice but to switch.

  • I know it sucks and I'd be unhappy with having to switch again, too... but this isn't normal!  A dual pill or nuva ring (dual hormones on that, too!) are supposed to regulate your period and remove a lot of the unwanted period symptoms.

Have you considered an IUD?  No hormones and prevents pregnancy.  Some times, you even lose your period for good!

I know entirely too much about bcp, but I'm not a doctor.  Go talk to your doctor or a different doctor and get another opinion.  You'll find something that works.
  • I was put on birth control from my doctor about 6 months ago. When do you take the pill? I felt sick to my stomach when I was taking the pill in the mornings. Try taking the pill before you go to bed at night. Also taking it consistenly at the same time will help as well. You don't want to be on one pill for only a month and then switch and keep switching. You are suppose to give it a change to work. My cousin is a doctor and I had an awful time with the pill when I first started it but she told me to use it for at least 4 or 5 months. It helped. I would not suggest switching to another pill so soon. I would stop taking the pill until after the wedding if you can. It took me about 5 months to get used to the pill and to drop the 10 pounds that I flucuated in weight. It is not good for your body to keep trying new pills after only being on them for a month.

Yeah, anything that makes you that sick is no good at all!

I'm another advocate for the NuvaRing, I love it.  Also, you may want to look into Natural Family Planning (aka, the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility) for a method of non-hormonal birth control.

If your doctor isn't on board with doing everything to help find something that works for you and has you feeling good, find a new doc!!

  • Thanks for the tips. It's given me a lot to think about.

Btw, I am taking it at night, before bed consistantly. I even wake up in the middle of the night sick. :(

  • I tried 10 different birth controls and was insanely sick just like you!  I finally gave it up. I don't like taking pills. If you feel that bad I'd stop taking them and do natural family planning.  Especially if u don't need to be on them and your periods are normal. Natural family planning works.  I have not been on birth control in 10 years and I only got pregnant when I wanted to have my 2 kids. I hope you feel better!
