Getting in Shape

What's your favorite guilt-free way to satisfy your sweet tooth?

I am an exercise addict. I love my gym and the group fitness classes. Last night I went for two and a half hours and hit up spin class, abs class and yoga. I just love it.

But I also love sweets. Way too much. I used to be really good about eating fruit or nuts instead of candy, but ever since one of my best friends got hired at work, now we eat together and he's a horrible influence. I've been eating candy almost every day. (Which of course is no one's fault but my own! It's just hard to resist when he has chewy runts, skittles, chips and cookies every day!)

I need to get back on track!

I'm hoping that some of you can inspire me :)

  • My new thing is chocolate graham crackers, not super healthy (2 full sheets is 140 calories, 3.5g fat i think) but wayyyy better than the chewy chips ahoy I really want!! We also do skinny cows and good dark chocolate.

  • I just eat what I want in moderation, and then don't feel guilty about it. I work really hard never to associate feelings of guilt with eating. I don't think it's healthy to feel bad about eating something. It's not like you killed a puppy or anything--it's just a little candy. Don't think of food as the enemy! You need it to survive, and by putting things on a "guilty" list, you're just going to make yourself miserable whenever you're around those foods.

With that said, I recognize that we can't go around eating candy all of the time. Whenever I am hungry and offered something unhealthful, I ask myself if I really want that, or if I would rather eat whatever the more healthful thing I have with me. Most of the time, I don't actually feel like eating candy--and believe me, my sweet tooth is unparalleled. But if I do want a piece of candy, I take a SMALL amount, enjoy it immensely, and move on. No guilt. If I'm NOT hungry and someone offers me candy, I usually say no. I don't enjoy eating when I'm not hungry.

  • I know I need something sweet after dinner to feel satisfied or I snack all night.  So I work it into my plan.  I find something that works, and make it a set in stone part of my plan.  If I decide I don't want it, I don't force it, but I never feel bad for eating it.  I know it's what works best for me.

  • strawberries! they are coming into season now! i top yogurt or cereal with them, works everytime.
  • I LOVE the Jello Mousse Temptations in Chocolate Indulgence.  It's sugar free and only 60 calories.  It's sooo good!  I usually eat one after dinner and that satisfies my need for a dessert.
  • Frozen berries with cool whip  OR  FI and I sometimes go out for frozen yogurt. It's non-fat and they also have some vegan options. Mmmm Mmm delicious! [:

  • I 2nd the jello sugar free moose temptations.  They are good.  You can also get sugar free chocolate pudding and add berries. I like raspberries.  The other thing that I do is buy hershey's dark chocolate kisses keep them in the freezer (so they are sort of out of sight).  I try to only have 2 a day that way I still can get my chocolate fix with out eating too much.
  • Ditto whoever said Skinny Cows. THey are pretty good. I try not to get them too often though because if they're in there, I will eat them too quickly.

A vamilla yogurt mixed with berries and granola is also a great sweets alternative. I get an organic yogurt sweetened with cane sugar rather than the artificial sweetener. I've heard a lot of people rave about greek yogurt, but I haven't tried it personally.

  • Sugarfree fudgesicles (40 cal) are awesome. Also...on a suggestion from one of my girlfriends I tried desert-flavored gum which was surprisingly good.

  • fruit with yogurt, or homemade chocolate covered fruit!

I put 1 or 2 small squares of dark chocolate into a bowl, pour in a little milk, and microwave for about 20-30 seconds till everything is soft/mixable.  then start dipping fruit!  I only make enough for about 8-10 strawberries at a time, so its a great snack. you can use any fruit you want =)
  • I'm with Arwo, I eat whatever I want, just not a lot of it.

To get my chocolate fix I generally have a chocolatey protein bar on the way home from work.  It keeps me from wanting to snack before dinner.  I run a lot, so that 180 calorie chocolate peppermint Luna bar I'm having on the drive home is not going to put weight on me.

I tried to avoid sweets for a really long time and it just ended up with me going nuts when I was around it again.  So now, I take a bite or two and walk away.  Your body doesn't actually need the junk, it's not giving you any nutrients, you just crave the taste.  So once I get that I'm generally good to go.

  • I often eat some cereal as a sweet - but not too sweet - treat. Most of the time I don't have a full serving, and eat it dry, but other times I enjoy it with some skim milk too. Some of my faves: special K red berries, Cheerios (and kind!), honey nut shredded wheat

  • I have several flavors of tea that are dessert-y (like chocolate and toffee) and they are zero calorie yummy! It is really nice in the winter to have hot tea but they make pretty good iced tea too. Plus I find a lot that I confuse hungry and thirsty so this helps with both. Or at least buys me the time to get over my craving!

  • I like to freeze yoplait light yogurt.  They're only 100 calories each, and frozen, they take awhile to eat and get rid of my ice cream cravings!

  • I agree with the PP about the sugar free chocolate jellos and SF fruit flavored jellos...SF jello is awsome with whip cream, which has hardly any sugar. I also might have a 1-2 ounce peice of dark chocolate after a meal, or a latte with SF flavoring of some kind...hazelnut is my favorite. Also, it sounds silly, but whipped cream/coolwhip with SF flavored syrup (like what goes in lattes or italian sodas) is really really good!
A cup of SF hot chocolate is also amazing.

  • Get that candy out of there!!! Throw it all away. Tell your co-worker he is not allowed to offer or give you any candy...even if you beg.
You could also bring some of the jellos (you can buy them in individual cups) to work with a tub of whip cream, so you can have that when he is eating candy. Then you will still get to satisfy your sweet tooth.
But seriously, get that candy out of your sight, and preferably, out of the building! If it isn't there, you can't be tempted. If it's there, you're likely to give in and have some.

  • i LOVE sweets too!!! in a badd badd way...

I'm doing WW.. so the sweets I get to eat are: klondike 100 calorie ice cream bars, WW little mini candy pieces... they have a couple different kinds, caramel, chocolate, toffee. . . One craves my craving! :)

100 calorie pack oreo cakesters... they have 3 mini cakesters that i love!

I also like to have a bagel thin with a tablespoon of peanut butter.. toast the bagel! Its amazing!

fruit with fat free whipped cream with fat free graham crackers... yum!

  • Ok this may sound strange but I buy the plain greek yogurt (Fage brand is the best, no sugar, no carbs, lots of protien!) then I buy a box of sugar-free jello mix in flavors like peach, strawberry, etc.  Then you spinkle the mix in a small bowl of the yogurt and it becomes yummy flavored yogurt without the sugar and carbs!  You can also add fruit or granola.  It helps me with my sweet tooth and makes for a healthy snack throughout the day too!
  • I dip apple slices into a Tbsp or 2 of peanut butter.  It satisfies my craving for sweets plus it has protein to keep me satisfied longer.

  • I love to dice up an apple and put some cinnimon and splenda on it and microwave it til the apple is soft and it's like eating apple pie. Sometimes I'll even add a scoop of frozen vanilla yogurt.
  • I second sugar free popcicles (when it's hot out) and sugar free hot chocolate (vice versa).
  • I make my own little sugar-free frozen Reese's cup.  Melt a no sugar added fudgsicle in the microwave and stir in 1/2-1 teaspoon of creamy peanut butter.  Once it's well-mixed, fold in sugar free cool whip.  It's AMAZING and the volume of the cool whip makes it seem like a bigger dessert.
  • I have been making my own flavored yogurt with fat free or lowfat plain yogurt (Greek is the BEST!) and mixing it a small amount of agave nectar, cherry jam, and vanilla extract. Then I stick it in the freezer for 30 minutes or an hour. It gets extra thick and tastes like ice cream. Fewer calories than storebought yogurt, and way less sugar.
  • Breaness: YGPM.
  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Some of these are definitely worth trying!
  • Fresh fruit (always been my favorite), Skinny Cow ice cream sandwich, or Twizzlers...

  • fiber one makes brownies!! 90 cal, and they are (duh) packed with fiber so they also make you feel full... i am super picky about the flavor of my chocolate and i actually really really enjoy these!!!!
  • A bit weird but I tried it on a trip in Mexico. We ate fresh mango sprinkled with a chilli powder. Sounds bad but it's actually really good, it's kind of like sweet and sour but sweet and spicy. Mexican mangoes are really sweet.
  • I'm amazed (and jealous) of all the people that can satisfy their sweet tooth with fruit.
