Getting in Shape

Knees

I recently started running outside.  For the first few times I did it, I didn't have any problems.  Then my knee started hurting so I started wearing a brace on it.  Well I ran for three days in a row and then I got sick, so I had to take some time off from running.  Well during the time off, both of my knees started hurting and when I tried to run agian, I couldn't because they both hurt.  Any idea what would cause this?

Re: Knees

  • What kind of shoes are you wearing? Do they have enough cushion to absorb the shock?
  • it could very well be your shoes, maybe they aren't helping your foot alignment (like you may be an overpronator, and your shoes may not be helping). also, you may want to get your form checked - a trip to a running store could kill both birds with one stone. if your form's off, you may be putting too much pressure on your knees.

good luck! nothing's more frustrating than being sidetracked by pain or injury.

  • They are Nike shoes.  I can't remember what kind they are, but I just bought them.  I know it is so frustrating!  But I will definitely check out the shoes and my form!  Thanks!

  • Agree with pp.  Your knees need to get conditioned to running so some soreness will happen at first but you should absolutely go to a running store and have them watch you run.  I still wear my nikes off and on because I have the running chip with my iPhone but I have to go back to my Sauconys for everyday running.

  • try using the eliptical trainer.  I know it isn't answering your question exactly... but I have knee pain issues too.  When I bike or run they hurt quite a lot, but the eliptical trainer (don't know how to spell that) burns more calories anyways, and no pain :).
Can't wait for our wedding in Banff! I am truly marrying my best friend :).

Be careful and listen to your body. I had some soreness and thought it was just from working out/running but 5 months later its still here! If it doesn't go away I would make a trip to a doctor to find out whats causing it. I went to the doctor after about 3 weeks of resting & icing and it not improving.
  • This exact same thing happened to me when I first started running- it was my shoes (just fyi).
