Getting in Shape

Talk to me about...

Protein powders.  I know this is a topic that comes up a lot around here but honestly I don't know much about them.  I want to start doing fruit smoothies for breakfast (got a new blender! wo0!) but I don't know what powder I should be putting in them.  What do you use? What do you recommend? Anything to avoid?

Also I really hate the idea of going to buy one - all the health-foody stores around here are filled with muscle bound men and skinny arse women.  Terrifying! I want to know all I can so I can make a (quick!) informed decision.

Help me out, ladies!

EDIT: Also, FYI I'm totally posting and running.  I'm heading on lunch break then a meeting.  Back in a few hours.

  • My trainer recommended to me Isopure Zero.  I've been using it for awhile and it's fine.  I get it at the gym across the street from mine, which is a really annoying gym full of toolbags and idiot "trainers" so I just go in, ask for what I need and get out as quick as possible.  I'd just act like you'd been buying it forever :)

  • I use Isopure No Carb Vanilla.
  • You don't have to go to GNC to get it. They have it at Whole Foods, and I belive even Trader Joes. Probably most other well-stocked grocery stores, too.

  • yes don't feel limited to gnc - i'm an online shopaholic, and i've looked everywhere for better buys. if i buy my protein (optimum nutrition whey in chocolate) from gnc, that means it's really on sale there.

We don't have those stores - I'm in Nova Scotia, Canada.  Eeep!  <div>
</div><div>I've never seen anything at local grocery stores but maybe I'll do some more investigating! Thanks for the tip</div>

  • Another online source that seems to be significantly cheaper than GNC is:
    DPSNutrition.com
My FI and I order from there all the time...they are very trustworthy and quick :)

P.S. My fav's are BSN Syntha-6 line and Lean Dessert line (great products, plus SUPER yummy!!!!); as well as Optium Nutrition Whey.

Superstore might have it.  If they have a "health food" section.

I usually get mine at Popeyes.  From their site it looks like there's on in Halifax and one in Dartmouth.  I buy Iso-Sensation.  You could also try supplementscanada.com.

FWIW, the first time I went into Popeye's, they were super nice.  The guy helped me pick out the right kind of powder, and offered to let me try anything I wanted.
