Getting in Shape

Healthy Breakfast Choices

I have a really hard time waking up in the mornings, and making breakfast is definitely the last thing I want to do, especially when I have no idea what to make that is healthy. Does any one know of any healthy breakfast choices that they would like to share? I'm trying to stay away from bread products... thanks in advance!

  • I recommend crystal meth.  Unless, like, you want to keep your teeth.

Cereal is always easy, I really like the Kashi cereals.

My go to breakfast at work is scrambled eggs in the microwave because it's super easy. I didn't realize you could make them in the microwave until recently, and I thought they would be gross but they're not. I add some chopped candadian bacon and non fat shredded cheese, and it's yummy. Plus you can add tons of stuff to scrambled eggs - chopped veggies, salsa, chopped turkey - kind of like an omelet but easier to make. And the eggs give you a lot of protein which keeps you feeling fuller longer.

Instant oatmeal is also a good choice - you can add tons of healthy stuff to that too - fruit, nuts, a little milk for some calcium. I was obsessed with blueberry oatmeal for a long time, heh.

    Sorry.  :D

I like cheese chunks for breakfast.  It has a lot of protein so its kind of filling.  I'm a fan of sharp cheddar, and a banana or grapes.  You can buy the bags of cheddar that is already cubed, or cube it ahead of time, throw it in a baggie, and eat it on your way to work.

  • I switch back and forth between high fiber oatmeal with milk or a high fiber english muffin and 1 tbsp of peanut butter.  Both are pretty filling.

  • Smoothies are yummy in the summer months and the variety is endless. You can precut and premeasure everything the night  before so all you have to do is throw it in.

Also, I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I've heard a lot about http://greenmonstermovement.com/. Then there is always the overnight oats option that so many ladies on here suggest.

I'll cut up some fruit the night before and in the morning throw some yogurt on it and top with some gronola. Very yummy and filling. Boiled eggs are also great on the go.
  • I eat a bowl of Special K anymore (in all seriousness, not an attempt to continue the drug reference!) :)
Sometimes I'll switch it up and go with greek yogurt with fruit and/or granola/nuts, a smoothie or protein shake, or egg beaters.

Since it's your first meal after your body has spent the night in starvation mode, having a breakfast high in protein will jack your metabolism into high gear.  They've 'proven' that people who have eggs for breakfast are 60% more likely to lose weight faster than those who eat simple carbs or skip breakfast.  I've tried it, and though I don't know the exact statistics, it did help me feel more full for a longer period of time in the morning.

  • My usual go-to breakfasts are:
    - a whole wheat english muffin w/ natural PB and a sliced banana
    - overnight oats w/ chocolate protein powder, natural PB and a sliced banana
    - protein shake w/ chocolate protein powder, natural PB and a banana
(do you see a trend here?)
    - Greek yogurt w/ granola or Fibre 1 cereal and some thawed frozen fruit

Basically you want to get a good balanced serving of protein, good fats and complex carbs.  Oatmeal is one of the healthiest foods you can have for breakfast, especially when you pair it with some yogurt and fruit.

Also, Green Monsters are awesome.  They might sound (and look) gross, but you really can't taste the greens!

  • My go-to breakfast is old fashioned oatmeal. I make it in the microwave and then eat it once I get to work (I never have time to eat at home!).

I used to put some raisins, two packets of spenda and 1 tbsp of natural pb in it.  Now I put in somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4 of craisins or dried blueberries, 2 tbsp of flaxmeal and 1 tbsp of wheat germ along with two packets of spenda.  Flaxmeal is really good for you (omega 3's) and the breakfast is really filling.

I try to stay away from sugar and white carbs.  I also keep my grains to a minimum throughout the day.
  • I usually do eggs and toss in either some chopped up tomato, onion and cilantro with a little bit of cheese, or with tomato, spinach and some feta. There are so many veggies you can add to eggs.

Some days, I'll do a little bit of yogurt with fresh fruit and granola. If I'm really in a rush I will do cereal and a banana.
  • Egg white omelet and low fat cheese, French press coffee, and a piece of fresh fruit. YUM. I have it every morning. I'm a big fan of routines. Smile
  • Boiled eggs and yogurt:
I boil 10-12 eggs on the weekend, and leep them in a seperate egg carton marked "boiled" in black marker, so I don't accidentally grab two raw eggs and throw them in my lunchbag (it has happened). So, I grab two boiled eggs every morning, and eat them at my desk when I get to work. I also take an individual container of lowfat greek yogurt (I stay away from the flavored ones, because that is a lot of sugar). I lke the Greek Goddess vanilla ones...they just have a little bit of vanilla. If I have plain yogurt, I add some SF maple syrup or Agave nectar to it and some cinnamon.
I try to stay away from too many carbs, so if I might just have a half of a whole wheat English muffin, or a half a whole wheat toasted bagel with almond butter on top.
The yogurt/boiled egg thing is so easy to have for the work week.

I either eat cereal... or egg over easy on a whole wheat english muffin...or egg over easy on top of oatmeal. Sometimes I sneak a piece of cheese with the egg and english muffin. Is that cheating? Cheese is delicious. I can't help myself.

  • I like to have cheese and Kashi crackers, a Vitatop with a TBSP of PB on top, or yogurt with slivered almonds...all with fruit and coffee!
