Getting in Shape

Please ease my mind

So I bought my dress April 17th and I have pictures of me trying it on. I went to see my mother last weekend...it was the first time I've seen her since then...she says I look like I've lost 15-20lbs...the scale says 6lbs....WTF! Could this be true or is she sugar coating the truth and do I really still look like a stuffed sausage in ivory casing?

  • I think you are being a little hard on yourself!!  if you have lost 6 pounds, you have probably put on muscle and toned up; where you LOOK like you have lost 15-20.  thats a good thing!  the way you look means more than numbers on a scale!

  • I am def. very hard on myself...I have gained 20lbs since I quit smoking 2 years ago...and It's hard for me to feel good about how I look. I know I am healthier blah blah blah lol.
I just wish that the hard work I put into this will eventually payoff on the scale I guess...

  • Its very possible.  My coworkers keep saying "you've lost a lot of weight" when actually its only been about 10lbs on the scale!  I know I feel better, and my clothes fit a lot better, so that's good.

Don't worry about the number on the scale.  Chances are you are gaining some muscle by working out, which is heavier than the fat you are burning.

    Keep your head up!
  • the scale means verrrry little; honestly, it's just a source of frustration for a lot of us. you can definitely lose a lot of inches without having a single pound disappear on the scale, and the ol' "muscle weighs more than fat" theory does apply. if your clothes fit looser, and you feel progress in firmer muscles and other ways, just ignore the scale, and congratulate yourself on your progress!

and fwiw - 6lbs is still going in the right direction! if you want to think about it a different way, go pick up a 6lb weight and carry it around. it's not that light. and yeah, your body is missing that because of your hard work - now doesn't that seem better? :]

  • I know what you mean!
I lost 8 lbs in the past 6 weeks and saw my FI's Aunt and Gramma for the first time last weekend and they were like "You must have lost more than just 7 lbs!"
I am noticing that my clothes are getting a little looser, but I don't feel much different yet!
