Running shoes

I came to a realization today. My New Balance running shoes are entering retirement after three years of pounding the pavement. Duct tape and vaseline aren't keeping the blisters away anymore. I also think I might have done some slight damage to a ligament in my ankle on my run this morning. My feet also get pretty hot in them.

What running shoes do you like and would be willing to recommend? I have a size 9-10 foot.

Re: Running shoes

  • Three YEARS?! No wonder why you're in pain! You need to go to a sporting goods store and get fitted properly for running shoes, AND replace them regularly (like every four months or so). You can really screw up your joints by using lousy old shoes.

My favorites are Nike Skyline and Nike Free.
  • I personally LOVE New Balance runners and it's all I've bought for close to 6 years now! I find that there's no "break-in" period with them, and they last a decently long time (which of course varies depending on your mileage!). If you're running every day you probably should replace them every 4-6 months!

  • I bought a pair of Sauconys, but got shin splints as they weren't supportive enough. But a lot of people love them. I now have a pair of Brooks.

And ditto PPs - I've heard shoes should be replaced every 6-12 months.

  • I need a stability shoe so I wear Brooks Ariel.  I have been wearing that model for about 5 years now and I love them.  I want to re-iterate what previous posters have said....3 years is waaaaay too long to be wearing the same pair of shoes.  Check the mileage life of a pair of shoes and compare it to how much you run and that will tell you how long they should last.  I replace mine around the 6 month mark.
  • The last time I got fitted for running shoes, they recommended they be replaced every 4 months/400 miles ran. I thought that was pretty easy to remember, because it's almost like getting regular oil changes for my car LOL.
