Restaurant remorse

I've been doing my best to eat well and count calories.  Even have an account on Sparkpeople.  Went out to dinner tonight with a group of teachers from my school (it's open house night, so we had like a 3 hour gap between school dismissal and the open house) and ended up going wayyyyyyyyyy over my calorie limit for the day.  It's crazy how caloric these entrees are!

So now I have a touch of restaurant remorse. :(

Re: Restaurant remorse

  • Don't worry! It's JUST one meal. You'll be back on track tomorrow! This is not going to ruin your entire diet.

  • I agree, it is just one meal. One meal does not make you fat or thin. I think it is what you do a majority of the time that counts!
  • Absolutely agree with both PPs.  Unless you went 3500 calories over your normal range, you have nothing to worry about.  And if you did eat 3500 extra calories, I'd just take it as a learning experience :)

Personally, I wouldn't get on the scale tomorrow morning and flip out, remember that restaurants are notoriously high in sodium content. For me, that would be a water retention issue big time.

  • Ditto PPs - one meal won't derail your entire plan.  I know how you feel, though.  As much as I like restaurants, it is so hard to stay on track with high calorie, unhealthy (but delicious!) choices.  Hang in there!

  • I have done the same thing so many times!!! i just make myself work out a little harder and compensate by following my diet perfectly for the next couple days. Also, my fiance helps me out a lot. He helps me stay on track and keeps me going to the gym

  • Ditto everyone else.  It's only a meal, it won't kill you.  Just make sure you don't let it lead to a downward spiral of slipping back into old habits!  That was the biggest thing I had to learn.  Just because I screwed up once, doesn't mean I failed.  Get right back on the horse and keep going!

To help avoid going totally nut-so at a restaurant in the future, maybe take some time to look up the menu of the place you're going ahead of time and plan out what you're going to have.  If you've got a plan, it's easier to stick to it.  Or, find a like minded (healthy eating) individual and split an entree.  Most portion sizes at restaurants are at least double of what we should be eating, so sharing one (or getting half boxes up right away) is a good way to have a meal out, but still be health conscious!
