Conquering the Scale

Hi everyone, so this is the beginning of week number three for me. I have been working out 6 days a week doing both strength training and cardio workouts. I have been good about counting my calories and being aware of what I eat and have only slipped one day each week due to the holiday weekend and a wedding I had to attend this past Saturday. Last week when I weighed in I lost 1.4lbs, today, zip. I'm not gaining weight, so thats good, but for the amount of exercise and work I am putting into eating right, I am quite disappointed that I am not losing any weight. What do you guys do to stay motivated when week after week the scale doesnt coincide with how you feel? My muscles are sore, but I am feeling a bit stronger than when I started. Too soon to tell with clothing I think.

Re: Conquering the Scale

  • If I'm not seeing a difference in the scale, and have been putting in a lot of hard work, then I just lay off the scale for a while. It's just an added stressor that I don't need. If I'm feeling strong, my endurance is high, and my clothes are fitting better, then my weight is just a number, not a definition for how healthy I am.

  • true - lay off the scale. you know that you're working hard and not gaining, so don't stress about the numbers. truthfully, there are so many things that can affect what you weigh at any particular time, so go by something else that you know will give you a good indication of your progress - like measurements, how your clothes fit, before/after pics, etc.

you're losing weight! don't let the scale get you down.

  • I posted about this exact issue a month or so ago. The same thing is happening to me. Very little change in the scale for my effort - hmph. However, I do feel stronger, my pants are looser, my muscles show more tone, etc. Everyone's suggestions are good: don't focus on the scale or put it away for awhile. I am convinced it takes your body a few weeks to "catch up" to the physical exertion you are putting forth - fat takes time to dissolve, water weight has to dissipate, etc. Expecially if you are only moderately overweight or of normal weight - you just have less to lose and it's harder to lose it than if you are seriously overweight. I think I saw a sudden drop after 4 weeks or so of two pounds, and then I plateau-ed a bit again.

  • besides the scale. try taking your measurments. you could also be gaining muscle.
