Getting in Shape

Need to loose weight!!!

I have gained a FEW pds in  the past 4 years because I had back surgery 2 times in the past 3 years and now I am getting married next year in Sept and I really can't exercise the way I used to when I weighed 145. I can't run or walk for long periods of time and also the Hubby to be needs a few Pd to loose any ideas for us that is low impact but effective???? Need help ASAP!!!

Re: Need to loose weight!!!

  • Changing your diet is extremely low impact and effective.  Track your calories on a site like sparkpeople or livestrong.

As far as exercise, biking is low impact.  Swimming is low impact.  Strength training is low impact.

Ditto all of this.  No matter how much exercise you do, it won't make a difference if you're eating too much and too much crap.

  • Why don't people know the difference in LOSE* vs LOOSE* ?!

    Sorry--- grammar nerd over here
  • You need to lose weight.

And your pants will then get looser.

    See?
  • The only thing that has ever been successful for me is Weight watchers. I've been on it for 3 weeks and I've lost about 10 lbs. I do workout around 4x a week but weight watchers will help you lose weight even if you can't workout. . . But you can workout!

Doing things super small will be considered working out, especially if you don't usually do anything.

Since it's getting nicer outside, make it a point to go on short walks with your hubby. MAKE HIM DO IT! Give him an incentive.... Tell him that if he walks with you twice a week (to start with) then you'll make a yummy dessert! (Weight watcher dessert recipes are awesome!)

Anyway, I highly recommend joining weight watchers. Only one of you has to pay for the service... do 3 months and then figure it out yourself alone without the online service, you'll be able to! Trust me :)

  • All about the diet!  First trick, cut out soda.  Drinking water makes a significant difference in the amount of bloating you have, not to mention all that sugar and all those chemicals you're cutting out (yes, even in diet soda).

Second, try to cut out processed foods.  Things like "low fat" potato chips are not as good for you as an apple.  Never have been, never will be.

And third, I definitely support the notion of strength training, when done properly.  You're not going to get "all beefy", so don't worry about it.  None but a veeeeeeery small percentage of women even have the inherient capability to build huge muscle masses.  Also, swimming and biking.  I don't know if you can do the eliptical.  It's supposed to be low impact but I hate it will a passion because it makes my hips hurt.

Uh, have you ever tried to make a man do something involving losing weight?  It works about as well as making a cow walk down a flight of stairs.

However, I see nothing wrong with asking FI/H to go for a walk with you.  But dragging him out the door isn't going to do anyone much good.

  • Ditto PPs - the diet is the first thing that needs to change.  switching to ONLY drinking water and snacking on raw fruits and veggies instead of processed stuff has helped me a great deal.  And honestly, while it was hard for like a week, maybe two - I don't miss it anymore.
  • Yoga (my workout of choice) is low impact. If you are interested find a studio near you and set up some time with an instructor beforehand to get a few modifications for poses that could put too much pressure on your back. I would recommend this for ANY work out class that you may start taking if you have an injury of any kind.

Set fitness goals for yourself and when you meet them reward yourself with a new workout outfit, water bottle or try a delicious healthy recipe. Make sure your rewards to yourself are sticking to your goals and bringing you closer to them.

  • I recommend changing your diet first and foremost. Start increasing the amount of clear liquids you drink, especially water. This will help to jump start your metabolism. Also, it is very important to increase the amount of protein you are taking in. Protein is proven to speed up and stabilize your metabolism, which leads to long term weight lose.

And start thinking about smaller portion sizes as well. When you have a full plate in front of you, eat slowly and pay attention to when your body is telling you it is full; chances are eating the entire portion is very possible but in order to lose any weight at all you need to reduce calories.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks to all the ladies who have given me some GREAT ideas... I hope to fine a success story at the end of all this... Not only has then been a selfesteem downer for me but my future hubby to be. So I will try and keep u posted... Thanks again:)
  • Hey Possum,
I know what your going through because I fractured my back a couple of years ago and now I can't do anything like I used to!  My ohysical therapist showed me several exercises that also help you to lose weight, so this may be an idea for you.  Swimming is a wonderful exercise.  I know you said you can't walk for long periods of time, but walking is actually one of the BEST exercises you can do to help strengthen your back.  (This is ALL coming from my physical therapist because I in no way knew any of this before him!)
