Getting in Shape

Recover from surgery in time for wedding

A year ago I underwent major surgery for a life-threatening condition (not trying to lose weight).  Since then I have lost too much weight and then gained it back with a vengeance.  All this weight change and inactivity from recuperation has caused stretched skin and weak muscles  I need to get back in shape but am still weak and experience pain from my ordeal, especially for exercises focusing on my abdomen.

Has anyone else had to deal with major surgery recovery before their wedding?  Any suggestions on how to get in shape without over-doing it?  I've always had a good diet so that is not an issue.  So far I've tried yoga and walking.  Luckily I still have over a year before my wedding to try and feel good about my body.  I was hoping for some advice and to hear similar stories of recovery.

Thanks!

  • I haven't had the same experience as you, but my instinct is the same as yours: yoga and walking.  Done consistently, I think they can make a huge difference.  Maybe too a stationery bike or Pilates? And I think with the walking you could mix it up, like walking around your neighborhood some days and doing some more rugged terrain, like a dirt path at a local park, other days.

Best of luck to you.  You have over a year to get where you need to be, and I'm sure by the time your wedding comes you'll be feeling great!  Keep it up!

  • THanks so much for the support emilyec1!  I appreciate the suggestions and will definitely try mixing it up.  I think the nice summer weather will help get me going.  I've been at it for about 4 months and am just starting to notice a difference.  Will not give up, whether there is a wedding or not :).
