Question for Raynes about The New Rules of Weightlifting for Women

Hi Raynes,

I recently ordered the book you mentioned, "The New Rules of Weighlifting for Women"

I was just curious, what made you decide to pick up this book?

When did you start seeing results? (I know everyone varies with this question, not everyone has the same results, nor in the same places, nor in the same amount of time.)

I'm excited to read this book and lift weights. Although, I have to say, I feel kind of intimidated. Did you feel nervous or intimidated when you started?

Thanks :)

    Yay!  Another (potential) convert!

I first heard about the book at the beginning of January from a post on the Health & Fitness board on The Nest.  I Google'd it and found the site for the book w/ the first chapter on PDF.  I read that and was hooked.  I've never really been a fan of machines at the gym, and I knew I needed something "different".

I read the book through and followed the nutrition suggestions for a week or two before I got started at the gym.

I was SUPER nervous to start, and truthfully, I still get some nervous butterflies everytime I drive up to the gym, but I feel so much more confident now.

As for results, well, I've consistently had increases in my strength since I started, since that's really the point of the program.  My weight has FINALLY started to come down, but I've been consistently losing body fat% and inches since I started.  I'm not really starting to notice the muslce definition in my arms and legs, and there is so much more I can do IRL than before, 'cause I'm all strong and stuff now.

The JP Fitness Forum (link) has a really great FAQs section for explaining some of the different exercises and how the whole thing is set up.

I highly suggest reading the book all the way through before starting.  I learned sooo much reading that book.

  • I just wanted to chime in since I just started this program (after hearing about if from Raynes). this was my 3rd week following the program and I am seeing results my clothes are fitting better and I can definitely tell that I have more muscle. Over all my body is getting firmer. I wouldn't really say I can see the definition yet, because I have a lot of fat to loose, but I can definitely tell that I'm getting stronger.

  • Alright...now I am curious.  How much weight are we talking??  I lift weights at the amount that I feel I can handle without overdoing it, yet without it being too light.  Is the program similiar to that?

The weight you're supposed to use for this program is something that you can definitely finish your sets with, but probably not 2-3 more reps.

Right now I'm doing my incline presses with 30 lb dumbbells in each hand for 3 sets of 4 reps.

The key is to constantly be challenging yourself and always increasing the weight you lift.
