Is 40 grams of sugar the real recommended sugar intake... help please

Is 40 grams of sugar the real recommended sugar intake a day?

I used the site mydailyplate.com for the first time to track calories and it said that I consumed about 150 grams of sugar and the recommended intake is 40 grams.  I don’t know if that is possible because the site counted my sugar from my cereal (9 grams) my blueberries, my skim milk, my grapes, and wheat bread etc etc.

Everyone always says to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables but it appears that my sugar intake sky rocketed on the ½ cup servings of each that I had.

It seems ridiculous.  It counted my sugar from everything I ate.

What is going on?

Is that really your recommened intake of sugar?  Or do I not count the carbs and fruits I eat.  It appears to get only 40 grams of sugar a day I would not be eating much or getting the proper nutrition at all.

After reading 150 grams of sugar and having it bolded like that was a bad thing.. that I should be eating 40 grams really bummed me  out.

Does your recommended sugar intake really include your fruits, pasta, wheat breads, dairy groups, vegetables etc.

I think I eat pretty healthy and follow a balanced diet.  So what is up with the whole sugar intake stuff??

  • I am curious about this too because Ive been using that website as well, and I always seem to go over my sugar intake. Today I am at my limit, and all I had was yogurt, wheat toast and skim milk for breakfast! Its got to be wrong.
  • 40 grams seems is a little low but 150 is also pretty high.  What cereal are you eating?

You have to be SUPER careful about processed foods.  Breads and yogurts can be really high in sugar.  I made that mistake buying the flavored Chobani greek yogurt one time.

I have my daily sugar "goal" set between 55-85 grams.  I sometimes have trouble meeting that and I am a fruit-aholic.  I think I usually fall in the 60s.

On the flip side, switching to all "sugar-free" stuff has been pretty controversial lately.  There are a boatload of chemicals in all of those products to replace the sweetness of sugar.  Personally, I try to stay away from as many processed things as possible.  It's when I've eaten a bunch of boxed stuff that I end up having a sky-high sugar count.

  • I wouldn't worry that much about sugars coming from milk or fruit, but you should really look at where else it's coming from because 150g is REALLY high.
  • it is referring to added sugars not naturally occuring sugars. i just read an article about that but i forget where. i will rack my brain.
