Has anyone gone to the JOP?

I want a big wedding and dont think I'm willing to use my current budget but would like to wait and save  for a nicer/bigger wedding. I'm thinking about going to the JOP ASAP then have the big wedding in a church in 2012.
Has anyone done this? Or did you have a small ceremony- maybe parents only- then a big wedding later?

One question (just to understand your situation)... is there a reason that you need to get married immediately verses waiting?  I just don't see the point in getting married... and then having a wedding, unless it's a special circumstance.

With that said, if you don't have a special reason, and you want a nicer/bigger wedding - then I would wait.

You would call the second wedding a vow renewal.  You're already married.

It would actually be called "Convalidation" because I would be getting married in the catholic church and they dont recognize a marriage outside the church.
We need to get married ASAP due to immigration issues. We need to have our paperwork started by a certain date or our work will post an add for his job next year. If I had the money I would have a big wedding ASAP but I dont have a penny saved thus far.

if you wanted to marry in the catholic church, i'd suggest doing a small private ceremony and do a reception at a later date rather than going through the convalidation. i would think it would mean more to you and your FI that way

ETA: however, depending on how soon you need to be legally married, this may not be an option given all the requirements the church has (pre canna classes, sponsor couple, etc.)

You may be able to get a special dispensation from the bishop to get married and to forego the precana then.  However, if you talk to a priest in a smaller parish, he might be willing to marry you guys without it.  Call around to some of the parishes and see if they're willing to help you out.  I would even try the Cathedral in Downtown Dallas.

[QUOTE]Yeah, they usually give special considerations for things like that.  I know the deacon at our church was telling us he performed a wedding on a holy day because the groom was army and, as he put it, "You just kind of have to work around his schedule." At that point it becomes a personal choice.  My FI is Catholic and would not consider our marriage valid if we just went to a JOP, even if according to the state we were married.  You might not feel the same way.

Bill was very adamant about it as well.  I am Catholic and I had no problem getting married in the church.  However, I was ready to dump the wedding for other reasons.  CTK made it very easy for us.

Wow Thanks for the info! I will contact a church. Although I haven't officially joined a catholic church since I moved to Dallas. I hope the don't give my grief over that.
