Getting in Shape

Shedding lbs before the big day

So, I have over a year til I walk down the aisle and say I do. However, like a lot of women, I'd like to lose some much needed poundage before the big day. I've tried multiple times to lose some weight, each time with success I lost a few pounds but then found it hard to continue to stay on track. By staying on track I mean watching what I eat and getting into the gym. Anyone have some tricks to help me keep at it to lose weight before the big day?

Re: Shedding lbs before the big day

  • Weight Watchers works for me.  I started it last August, and to date, have lost 31lbs.  It doesn't seem like a lot, but I'm short, and I did it slowly.  I could have lost the weight more quickly, but I love to eat, and there were many, many weeks that I didn't lose a pound, but I didn't gain either.  There were also some weeks where I did gain a pound or 2, but that motivated me to get back on track the following week.  I do it online.  Once you learn the program, it's easy.

As for the gym, I don't go by myself.  My fiance gets me to go with him several times a week.  Good luck!

The good thing is you have plenty of time before the wedding.  Do you have a goal in mind?
  • You can't look at it as a diet, view this as a lifestyle change.  Make a diet and workout routine that you can and will maintain through the wedding and after it.  You are not restricting your life, you are bettering it by getting healthy.  The key to committing is in your mentality  :)
  • I agree that this has to be a life style change.

I am in a similar boat. A few weeks ago I decided to make a healthy change. I signed up for dailyplate.com and made a workout schedule. I plan for 2 weeks in advance. I write down what I will do (ie: treadmill, pilates, weights), what body part I will focus on and how long I will work out that day. It sounds silly, and a bit OCD but now I don't have to think about what I will do, and if I am mixing it up enough- I just do it! I am on week 3 and still going strong!

If your a planner (like me), tracking your food and preparing your workouts in advance might work.
  • my recommendation for getting started is be real with yourself.  trying to lose 30 pounds in 2 months is crazy.  agreeing with pp; incorporated a lifestyle that you can live with.  if that means pasta a few times a week, learn some healthy recipes for things that you like.  find out how many calories you should be eating daily, track them, and plan meals for that.  get into the gym and do different exercises 3 times a week.  you will feel good, and though it will be hard, you wont want to stop!

one thing that helped me was the online resources available.  i took my bmi, and my bmr, and tried to take measurements for body fat percentage.  realizing that these tools are not each a sign of how healthy you are, use them as a guide to where you want to be.

  • I lost weight before my day and for me the key was tracking my food and calories, you must write down what you eat.  I also found a workout that I loved and I kept doing it at least 5 times a week.  When you write down your calories you will see that even healthy food needs to be in the proper portions or you will not lose weight.  I hope this helps!  Hang in there.  It is possible to lose the weight and change your lifestyle for good, take baby steps and you will get there.  Its all about burning more calories than you take in.  There are calorie counters online to let you know how many calories you can consume and still lose weight.  I use sparkpeople.com its free and it gives you a range to stay within based upon your goals and your activity level.
  • Thanks for the all the tips. Goldie, I'd like to lose at least 20-30 lbs, before my wedding. My ultimate goal is 50, but even to chop down 25 before the big day would be a huge step. I have done the tracking food/calories and watching what I eat but my problem is sometimes like others when I have a bad day I don't care. I want to throw in the towel and just forget it.
