Re: best diets to keep weight off? does alli really work?

  • Hi!

As a physician, I've had some patients take Alli and have had some difficulties with the synthetic materials contained within the pills. Alli is a less regulated, form of orlistat or xenical which is not very effective for weight loss. Once you stop the drug in most clinical trials over 80% re-gained the weight anyway.

Alli causes some stomach discomfort, abdominal bloating, gas and DEFINITELY increased pooping/diarrhea for some.  And since most people gain the weight back, all that pooping and discomfort was for nothing.

I would recommend increasing your exercise! I know we are super busy, however, if you make the LIFESTYLE choice to incoportate exercise into your everyday schedule, you actually feel horrible when you miss a day of working out! To get in shape, which I didn't start doing until my first year of medical school, I began signing up for running races. I started with 5K's and when I was comfortable, I moved on up to the 10K's and now I do about 8 half marathons a year.

When you start working out and make that lifestyle change, you diet falls into place. A runner's best friends are bananas, peanut butter, and whoel wheat pastas and breads. Of course you already know about fruits and veggies. Whenever I go out to eat I get a salad...light dressing on the side, no bacon, careful on the cheese. 150% better than a burger and fries. Be cognizant of your diet choices. Splurging is good once in a while...finace and I love ice cream and wine...and I don't deny myself, but it's on occasion.

I hope this helps. I have tons more advice, let me know if I can help more!

I, literally, hit myself in the forehead with the palm of my hand when I read the OP.

Alli AND the cabbage soup diet, in ONE POST?  Is it a full moon today?

There's no quick fix when it comes to weight loss.  At the same time, losing weight isn't some magical mystical, barely attainable thing.  It's math.  Burn more calories than you consume, and you'll lose weight.

That being said, not all calories are created equal.  Your body will thank you for eating 100 cals of grilled chicken breast, but not be pleased with 100 cals of potatoe chips.

Healthy, sustainable weight loss happns at 1-2 lbs per week and occurs as a result of a healthy diet and exercise.

<div>OMG- I took Alli for about a week, and it was TERRIBLE- I was really staying on track with the fat grams they say you're allowed to consume and I STILL had a (tmi!) "accident" AT WORK! it was TERRRIBLLLLLEEEEEE!!!!</div><div>Luckily I was on my lunch break so I was able to be discreet, but come on! Oh goodness, just thinking about it now is giving me terrible flashbacks! </div>

This is what gets me the most about your post - are slimfast shakes not LOADED with sugar?

Eating healthy and exercising is the only thing that will work in the long run. Try sparkpeople.com as a place to track your daily food intake and exercise. Take it from someone who has tried nearly every fad diet out there - Atkins, cabbage soup, I even once fasted on water for 9 days (yes, I was mentally seriously messed up). Even worse than not being effective, fad diets will mess up your metabolism so badly that when you finally some to your senses and start losing weight the real way, it's much harder to do.

Just track your food and exercise. Willpower required.

  • thanks everyone! i've been watching what i eat more, and had a chance to goto the gym for a few hours the other day, i've lost 2 lbs so far. my goal is to lose 15-20 by the end of the summer.

about 2 years ago, i ended up losing 35 lbs (with exercise and a strict diet) and since then i've gained about 10 of it back. would like to keep it off, and a little extra hopefully!
