To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse?

Hi--I just stopped the BC pill (Loestrin made me gain weight like CRAZY--many posts to this effect online) and want to get it OUT of my system ASAP so I can start losing weight again. I'm debating whether or not to do a cleanse. Anyone lose a significant amount of weight on a cleanse, or find one that jump started weight loss again after hitting a plateau? Thanks!!

Re: To Cleanse or Not To Cleanse?

  • Don't do it. Doing a cleanse won't help hormonal birth control leave your system any faster, it will just make you dehydrated and hungry.

Eat GOOD food, get some exercise, and drink plenty of water. You'll be fine.
  • Please don't cleanse.  Please please please don't.

It's not going to flush anything out of your system.  Any sort of colon cleanse is just a laxative anyway.  Drink your recommended amount of water (1 oz for every 2 lb you weigh is the new guideline) and eat a healthy diet with plenty of natural fibers.  Exercise is also key.  Get the blood pumping and the sweat flowing, it's a much more natural cleanse (and safer.  and actually works.)
  • Ditto the others, don't do it.

The hormone will work it's way out of your body at it's own rate, there's no speeding that up.

If you want to "cleanse" cut out junk processed foods, eat real, whole meals, and drink plenty of water.  You have organs that do the cleansing for you.

  • Agreed, don't do it. Cleanses make you lose a bunch of water weight, but they also slow your metabolism down. So when you start eating real food again, you gain the water weight back and then can't burn as many calories. I have a friend who is tall and pretty thin but wanted to lose a few pounds to fit into a skimpy Halloween costume so she tried the Master Cleanse. She lost 11 pounds in a week, but within two days of going off it she had gained it all back and then GAINED ANOTHER TEN POUNDS ON TOP OF THAT in the month after going off the cleanse, even though she wasn't eating worse that she was before going on the cleanse.
  • I agree with your wisdom, fellow posters; I believe in healthy eating and good old fashioned fitness. I am not looking for a quick weight loss fix as much as detoxing my body from this pill--all the hormone built up making me retain water. I've been working out at least an hour a day, 5-6x/week and usually at least maintain my weight easily or lose weight, except while on this pill. It's an androgenic pill that causes insulin resistance apparently, and affects athletic women the most according to horror stories online (triathletes and marathoners gaining 10-30 pounds in a matter of a few months effortlessly). I'd like to think I can just sweat it out, but I feel like I'm completely toxic from it. I'm just frustrated I guess--staying off the pill for good!
