Getting in Shape

Broke my foot 12 weeks before wedding

Does anyone have any advice for how to do meaningful cardio when you have a broken foot and can't run, bike, etc.?

I've always worked out, but recently stepped up my game and hired a trainer to get in bridal shape.  Lifting weights, kickboxing, running, you name it -- I was on track to fabulousness!  Then, roughly 4 weeks ago, I tripped like a dumbass and broke a bone in my foot.  Not a serious break, fortunately, but I've been sidelined nonetheless as they take *at least* 6-8 weeks to heal (if you're lucky). I'm doing well and walk in sneakers now, though slowly and with a limp. I'm on a strict eating plan and doing strength training with my personal trainer since I can't do much else right now.

I'd appreciate ANY suggestions/advice to help slim down before the wedding day.  (Mine is at the end of August.)

And one major piece of advice: If your wedding is coming up, please BE CAREFUL and don't end up like me!!

  • Ouch! Sorry to hear that happened! I'm not sure if you're in a full cast or not, but could you swim at all?

    I hope it heals quickly!

  • Yikes!  Sorry about your foot.
A lady who frequents my spin class broke her foot.  She would still spin, one-legged, with her boot propped up next to the bike.  She couldn't stand up, of course, but still got some cardio.

  • I'm not in a cast, thank goodness.  But I don't have access to a pool. I live in a city where pools are hard to come by.   I've tried going on a bike with one foot but can't seem to make the pedals go around (hmmm perhaps I'm a weakling!)

I appreciate the thoughts - thanks guys.

  • the only thing I can think of is punches. Air-punch the hell out of sh*t. definitely raises the heart rate and can be fun!
  • Oh that is awful! Good luck with the healing!

I sprained my ankle two years ago and was also sidelined for awhile. When I was finally starting to heal I was about to do the eliptical pretty well. You might want to give that a try.

  • Sorry to hear about this! Does your gym have an arm bike? It can be boring as hell but get a good playlist going for about 30 minutes and change up the movements every 30 seconds to 1 minute and its not so bad. I do 1 minute both arms pedaling forward, 1 minute right arm, 1 minute left arm, 1 minute both, 1 minute both arms backwards, 1 minute right arm backwards then 1 minute left arm backwards. Even though I'm not injured I do this routine 2-3 days a week in the summer since it gives really nice arms and shoulders.
  • oh god - sorry about your injury! (i have a huge fear of something happening before our day because i'm so accident-prone)

i suggest anything that you can do with your arms - a pp said punches and i think that'd do it. other than that i would say try to do static-leg ab workouts, where you're not moving your lower half a tremendous amount (unless you can?) and work on your upper body. if cardio is a difficult thing to maneuver, at least the muscle work will keep your body active and your metabolic activity going strong.

i hope you heal quickly!! :]

  • I agree with Althea. The Arm bike is definately your best bet. It still burns tons of calories and you get quite a workout. It will also give GREAT arm definition. And remember - there is NO such thing as "spot reduction". When you lose weight it will be evenly lost throughout the body. As for the boring monotonany that was mentioned - a great song list and changing up the pace and directions of the bike will help quite a bit. And also remeber you can still do strength training for your upper body and core.  You never know - this could be a blessing in disguise! :)

  • I am working with my personal trainer to do lots of upper body stuff, and am now able to get back on an elliptical trainer and stationary bike!  Woo hoo!  My break was a little over 5 weeks ago, so I think I must be a fast healer.  (By the way, ALL of the activity I'm doing has been cleared by my doctor-- gotta be safe and smart!)  Great call on the arm bike too.  I will give it a try.
    Thanks all!
