Bikram Yoga

Hi ladies!

So, I have done normal yoga before and I hated it. However, the concept of bikram yoga intrigues me. Have any of you ladies ever done it before? What did you think? TIA.

Re: Bikram Yoga

  • I haven't done it, but I would probably pass out from the heat lol.

  • I did it once.  You feel great afterwords.  I actually felt lighter the next day lol . I wish I had time to do it this week before the wedding!
  • It seems like people either love it or hate it.... personally, i love it.

Not sure how much you know abotu Bikram, but basically the class is 90 minutes and the room is heated to about 105-110 degrees. You do the same 26 postures twice each for about a 30-60 seconds the first time and a little less the second time.

In the traditional Bikram classes there is a specific monolouge the instructor gives you throughout the class. Unlike regular yoga, lights are on and eyes should stay open.

Bring a change of clothes, water, and a towel. The change of clothes is important because your clothes will honestly be drenched afterwards.

If you're looking for a challenge this class is great and you will feel amazing afterwards - mentally and physically. Give it a try!

  • What kind of yoga have you done before?

  • i did know most of that about bikram. i did a semester of yoga in college, plus i have done yogaX a few times(part of the p90x system). i am by no means good at it. but i thought it would be a fun challenge.
  • I have never done Bikram.  I find it's not offered as much here in Chicago as "regular" hot yoga, which I try to do regularly.  I find I am not as sore after or if I am sore from another workout, the heat actually helps me to loosen up and it's almost like therapy.  I'm interested in trying Bikram but I'm not sure I'll enjoy the repetitive nature of it (however, 90 minute classes?  that's bang for your buck).  I think there is a studio here that does a $29 unlimited first month and I'm thinking about doing it this summer to try it out.

  • Yes, there are also some "Hot Yoga" classes that are not Bikram (26 postures, twice each, with the dialouge, etc) and these classes are just yoga in a hot room. But don't be surprised if you have trouble finding a class actually called "Bikram yoga"...

A few years ago Bikram Choudhury, the guy that started Bikram yoga, obtained copyright registration for the sequence of poses, breathing exercises, and dialouge used in the traditional Bikram yoga class. He then tried sueing some places around the coutnry that were offering the class without his permission/supervision (and paying him basically).

The Bikram class I take actually is taught under the name "Hot Yoga 26".

  • I tried it and hated it, which really disappoints me.  I love yoga!  Well, the plain kind atleast.  I couldn't take the heat and left after about 20 min.  I tried sitting down and taking a breather every few minutes, but I just kept getting so dizzy and wanted to vomit.  And I even made sure to drink a ton of water and eat well that day.
