Water Challenge

I am the worst at drinking water.  It seems like a huge chore I have to do everyday and 90% of the time I don't do it.  Which of course is really really stupid because I'm sure I would shed weight from drinking a lot of water.  People say if you add stuff to it like crystal light then it doesn't count (is that true?).

Does anyone want to do a water challenge with me where you have to commit to drinking at least 80oz a day?

Also any suggestions to those who have the same problem I do.  Can I  add stuff to my water that has little or no calories and it still counts?

I only drink coffee usually a couple cups a day and a few sips of water usually.

Re: Water Challenge

  • i hate plain water too and i only drink it when i'm working out. i like seltzer though, so i usually just drink that during the day and i don't think it's any worse for you than water, even if it's flavored.

  • Weight Watchers says Crystal Light doesn't "count" (zero points), but you still need to have at LEAST three 8oz glasses of plain water a day on that plan.

I recommend having a Nalgene/Brita style bottle on your desk at work, and always keep it full.  You'll find yourself unconsciously drinking throughout the day (at least I do).  Also, since I prefer cold water, I have an ice cube tray in the work freezer to keep it stocked.  I sometimes grab lemons or splash lemon juice in the bottle to keep it tasty.

When I get the craving for soda, I have seltzer water with lemon or lime.  However, I would still try to get at least 24oz of PLAIN water per day.

I drink plenty of water, but soda is my downfall.

    HTH!  Good luck :)
  • I have a couple of BPA free plastic cups with reusable straws that I keep at my desk and carry around wtih me when I round.  I find I drink more water when I drink through a straw.  The cups and straws are dishwasher safe.  I put my coffee in them too.
  • I find that adding a splash of lemon juice makes water more palatable for me. It still counts as a glass of water if you put a splash of lemon juice in it.
  • Thank you ladies..as of now I will carry around a glass of water wherever I plop my butt and put a little lemon in it.  I will try straws if I'm still not improving.  As I mentioned though I don't know why I'm so stubborn when I'm sure the water is a huge key to me losing more.

    Thank you!

  • If you have an iPhone, they have an app called Waterlogged. It's totally helped me keep track of how much water I drink. I realized I drink a lot more than I thought I did, but still not enough, especially at work.

I agree with lemon. You can even do oranges, lemon and cucumbers. I like to mix it up, otherwise, I get bored.
  • I am horrible at drinking water, but I find that whenever I have a water bottle I will fill it up tons during the course of the day. I think that's step 1 for you is to make sure you carry a water bottle with you at all times. Without the bottle, I never really make an effort to get a cup of water or drink any at all. Weird huh?

  • take your body weight and divide it by 2 and thats how many oz of water you should drink daily. (usually thats the case). Or try drinking 8, 8 oz cups a day (64 oz) thats a good average for most women. I use to drink soda ALL THE TIME. Especially because I like to cram last minute for exams and it keeps me up. About two months ago I stopped drinking soda. The first week is really hard, the 2nd is sort of hard, after that I rarely want it. Water just compliments meals more imo. if you get over a 2 week hump, usually you will be fine and you won't crave it so much anymore. After noticing what H2O did to my skin too, there is no way I can go back. (at least not anytime soon). I just keep a milk jug full of distilled water and I drink it throughout the day. Sometimes I drink too much water (yes that is possible it can flush away nutrients), because i don't pay attention. But its nice having the giant gallon of water next to me while I'm studying/doing stuff. PS the soda thing sort of goes hand-in-hand with most caffinee drinks

  • 80 oz of water a day would make my stomach explode.

The days I get in 32 oz, I consider it a success.  I also drink about 16 oz of plain tea everyday (which I know is a diuretic, but you take what you can get).

I used to be pretty bad about drinking water.  I have a Nalgene at work that I fill and it becomes my Everest everyday.  I make sure I get through one complete Nalgene each day.  Yes, I'm drinking less than average, but it's 100% more than I used to drink.

Don't make your water challenge unachievable - start small and with something that you can adopt to your lifestyle.

Imagine all the peeing you will have to do if you drink a lot more.  Be sure you can handle that at work!  :-)
  • I put lime slices in my water bottle.

  • I'm not a huge fan of plain water either. And I also wanted to drink more green tea, but I don't care for that either. So I found a drink mix that I can add to a bottle of water that helps me do both. It's 4C's brand green tea/pomegranate mix. It's pretty yummy, and helps increase my water intake each day.
  • For whatever reason, I am 100% more likely to drink a lot of water if it is out of a water bottle, and I'll drink even more if it has lemon slices in it.

  • So today I have been refilling my water bottle and squirting in a little bit of lemon into it from one of those fake lemon juice bottles.  It is only 2pm and I have drank half of what I'm supposed to already and I haven't even been making myself.  Thank you ladies your ideas helped me accomplish drinking more water.

  • To all the water drinkers...just wanted to share this so you keep up the good habit!

My father was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and the first thing his oncologist said (while they were waiting for some initial tests and stuff) was to increase his water intake.  MM is a cancer that affects your blood and after drinking more water, his cancer levels actually went down (before any "real" treatment)! Apparently his blood was like "sludge" and the water really made a difference.

It is great for weight loss, but great in general too!
  • I am all for a water challenge here! Have you girls heard of MIO? The little water enhancer that just came out? (Or, I think it did.. lol) It's AWESOME! I just started using it today, and can I tell you...I've never drank so much water without thinking of it before! So far today, I have had 60oz. My day isn't over until shift end at 11p, so hopefully I can accomplish the 80oz goal!
