Getting in Shape

how to get those sexy legs

I'm not a fan of my thick athletic legs...what are some good workouts to make them a bit slimmer?

Re: how to get those sexy legs

  • I think it would help to know what is you're doing already, that gave you the athletic leg look.

If you want to know what I do for my leg workouts, on M-W-F I do HIIT for 25 minutes (working up to 30-40 minutes, but my endurance isn't quite there yet), plus I do some of the leg machines in the weight room (hip adductor/abductor, leg press, etc).

Tues/Thurs I do three or four sets of 15 lunges in front of my tv with 8lb free weights that I lift over my head after each lunge (it's hard to explain), and in between sets of lunges, I'll lay on my back with my knees up and lift my butt up off the floor (again, three or four sets of 15 lifts), and then I'll do three or four sets of 20 squats, and then three or four sets of 10 pushups (working my way up, but that's all I can do per set so far).

Well, pretty much you'd need different parents.

Your shape is mostly defined by your genetics.  If you've always had muscular "athletic" legs, short of stopping any kind of exercise with your legs, you'll always have muscular legs.

You can't get dancers legs just by dancing, or runners legs just by running.  People with those types of legs had them to begin with.

I suggest that maybe you learn to love "thick" legs because of all of the amazing things they can do for you!

  • While it's true that the shape of your legs is largely defined by genetics, if you are carrying any fat in your legs (as well as anywhere else on your body), you can do cardio exercises to lose fat and that may help you feel better about how your legs look.  But as everyone else said, you cannot spot reduce or change the shape other than losing that excess fat.

(I have a friend who has a super flat stomach where you can see her stomach muscles and thin arms where you can see her biceps, triceps, etc.  Her thighs are very muscular and not at all thin like the rest of her body.  It's genetics and it won't matter what she does, she will not look any different.  Like someone said, you have to learn to love the body that you were blessed with!)

[QUOTE]I have the same issue. I've found if I bike or ski more, I build up more muscle and make them bigger. If I run more, I get more lean muscle and they slim down. It's always frustrating at the end of ski season when I'm in good shape but the legs of my pants are starting to get tight because of muscle.

This is exactly what happens with me.  So, I run year-round, ski in the winter, and rooler blade in the summer.  It keeps me mixing it up and working different muscle groups.  The more different groups I work with, the slimmer my legs!
  • thanks for the honesty ladies. I guess I'll have to learn to love them!
