Getting in Shape

Have you heard of this?

My trainer told me today that limiting dairy and not eating refined carbs would help me lose weight. Obviously, refined carbs are not great for you and I understand why she would say that. Have any of you heard of the dairy thing? I thought low-fat dairy helps you lose weight. Not to mention we need calcium.

Re: Have you heard of this?

  • That's stupid.  Low fat or fat free dairy is a good source of calcium and protein.  Most trainers have very limited training in dietetics.  Limiting refined carbs is a good idea, but cutting out dairy is a crappy idea, unless you're lactose intolerant.

  • I think there was a misunderstanding, it's not low fat milk and fat free yogurt your trainer was alluding to. My doctor gave me similar, though obviously better worded, advice. You need to limit your intake of cheese, whole fat dairy products and anything cream based. Not only will it help you shed pounds but for many women who are careful about their dairy it also can improve the texture and appearance of your skin. J&K is right, throwing dairy out of your diet would be stupid but the bigger picture is what kind of dairy your getting. Hope that helps clear things up.

Ditto all of this.  Unless your trainer has specific training in nutrition, make sure you keep taking what they say with a grain of salt.

I totally agree with limiting refined carbs, they're really just empty calories, but if you have no problems with digesting dairy, then by all means, keep eating/drinking it!

  • No refined carbs is a good one.  There are some diets that tell you not to eat dairy for whatever reason but low fat dairy is really good for you.  Diets like south beach that are low in refined, simple carbs encourage dairy at all phases.  The serious low carb diets restrict dairy I think because it has lactose (a natural sugar) in it.

Keep eating (lowfat) dairy.  Cutting out refined carbs is a great idea though.  They're mostly empty calories and cause spikes in your blood sugar which will end up making you feel hungry.  My body seems happiest when I cut out refined carbs and limit other carbs (like bread, rice, etc.).
  • I cut out dairy a while ago for my skin, and it made a HUGE difference. I have always had bad acne, and noticed it clearing up within a week of being dairy-free. Occasionally I'll cave and have something and break out with a few pimples within a day or two, but even those aren't as bad and clear up faster than they used to. Otherwise my skin is almost completely clear. Weight wise, I was happy with where I was when I went dairy-free, but within a month I had lost five pounds without trying and since then have actually been struggling to maintain my current weight. I don't know if this is typical, it was just my personal experience.

I think when she said limiting dairy she probably meant sticking to low fat dairy and only taking the recommended daily amount. Also- enough to get your required amount of protein.

I have heard of some people switching from cow milk to soy and coconut and it helped them start to lose some weight, however I think they just may have some type of intolerance to milk that causes their body to retain the weight or react adversely (as one knottie above had noted about her noticing acne).

Limit your refined carbs for sure, incorporate tons of veggies, lean protein, and fruits, and stick to low fat dairy... pair it with exercise and you should be GTG!
