Getting in Shape

Breakfast help?

So I've been noticing that I eat far too much food after noon and not enough for breakfast.  Any suggestions?

I'd like it to be something I can eat in the car or at work (we do have a microwave.)  I'm getting sick of oatmeal and fruit.

Re: Breakfast help?

  • I eat whole wheat toast (60 cals per slice; I eat 2 slices) and natural peanut butter nearly every day around 7:30 a.m., then a banana at 10 a.m.
  • Thomas' Bagel Thins are great! I love the "Everything" variety the best.

You can eat them plain with light cream cheese OR

Lightly toast the bagel, cook an egg, then take a peice of canadian bacon, and a slice of cheese and make my own breakfast bagel sandwich. I usually make the sandwich, put it in a baggie, and heat it up once I am at work. Soo good, only 5 WW pts, packed with protein, and keeps me full until lunch!!

  • i usually eat eggs, but i know that won't help you much with no time - have you tried greek yogurt? i actually can't eat it because i have dairy issues, but the girls here love it for its crazy-high protein content -- that'll keep you fuller longer. i would say partner it with something thats full of fiber and you'd be good to go!

Protein and fibre are your best friends for breakfast.

I make a shake for breakfast w/ 1 med banana, 1 scoop chocolate protein powder, 3/4 cup skim milk, and 1 Tbsp natural PB.  I have that around 6:45 am, then a snack at 10am, (today was almonds and string cheese).

If I want something "solid", I'll usually go for a toasted whole wheat english muffin w/ PB and a banana on the side.  Again, eaten before 7 with a snack at 10.

Sometimes on the weelend for breakfast I'll have greek yogurt mixed with honey, Fibre 1 cereal and craisins.  I find that usually keeps be full a bit longer.

  • Great post! thanks for the suggestions!

What do you eat with the greek yogurt?  Or do you just eat it plain?  Or do you buy the flavored kind?

  • A hardboiled egg is a really healthy, filling and easy breakfast option! If I have one in the morning I notice that it keeps me satisfied a lot longer than a bowl of cereal. You can just make a half dozen on the weekend and eat them  every morning.

Also, I have found that watermelon is surprisingly filling!

  • I usually eat bfast in the office, so here are my favs:

Cereal with craisins - the craisins' sweet/tart taste is bold enough that you dont need to add sugar, no matter how bland the cereal is.

Greek yogurt - I buy the single serving cups (chobani) with fruit in the bottom.  I know it has a lot of sugars, but that doesn't bother me because I'm eating it with water and nothing else.  I usually need a mid-morning snack if all I have is yogurt for bfast.

Peanut Butter and Jelly on a ricecake/waffle/english muffin.

Like raynes, if I have time before leaving the house, I'll make a protein shake for breakfast.  I include frozen berries, yogurt (plain greek or regular), protein powder and ice or milk.  I also add ground flax to my shakes, but FI doesnt like that.

I think most people mix it with a spoonful of honey, flavored or not. Granola and fresh or dried fruit work well too.

Can you make them ahead of time and freeze/fridge them?  If I could make a shake the night before, that would be awesome.
  • Had a great breakfast this morning. This is in WW points, but I'm pretty sure it's around 250 calories. Very quick and sooo filling.

    toasted sandwich thin (1 pt)
    1/4 c egg beaters original (1 pt)
1 laughing cow light original swiss wedge (1 pt)
1/2 oz reduced fat cheddar (1 pt)
2 slices canadian bacon (1 pt)

Spray a large microwave-safe mug with nonstick spray. Pour in egg beaters & season with a little salt & pepper. Break up the cheese wedge and mix in. Microwave for 45 seconds, stir & microwave for another 15-30 seconds. Arrange canadian bacon, cheese, & egg mixture on the sandwich thin how you want & microwave for 20 seconds to melt the cheddar. Allow a bit to cool on your way out the door and enjoy!

I'm not sure about how easy it would be to make a shake ahead of time. I mean, it would be easy, but from what I've seen in the blogosphere, it just isn't as good.

You could get it all ready the night before.  Add in everything except your liquids, then blend in the morning.  Shakes literally take 5 or less minutes, so even if it's just in the morning, you should have the time!

As for Greek yogurt, I enjoy mine plain with a bit of honey added in.  Yesterday for breakfast I had the yogurt/Fibre 1/craisin mix and forgot the honey.  I was a touch nasty.  The honey makes is really yummy.

  • I usually have a wheat high fiber english muffin with natural peanut butter and low sugar jam, or slice up a hard boiled egg to put on top. I always eat in the car so it's quick, easy, and high in protein and fiber. You can also make breakfast burritos the night before w/ egg whites, black beans and salsa in a whole wheat tortilla, wrap in foil and refridgerate.

I used to eat Kashi high fiber waffles (dry) and I can't find them anywhere now, wth??

  • I usually will have a chobani single serving greek yogurt (with the fruit on the bottom) with a 1/4 cup of multigrain cheerios mixed in. A few hours later I usually have either a banana or clementines (or whatever type of fruit is available) and that will usually keep me full through my lunchtime workout and until about 1.

do you have a toaster at work?

2 toasted whole wheat waffles made into a sandwich with some peanut butter, or ripped into strips and dipped into yogurt.

also i get frozen egg patties in the breakfast section at walmart next to the frozen sausage patties. they heat amazingly well in the microwave and can be sandwiched between a toasted english muffin, slice of canadian bacon and cheese.

i used to spend too much money on breakfast sandwiches from a cafe at work, i started making my own kits to bring to work with me, just cut the english muffin (or bagle thin) in half (or use bread, toaster waffles, tortilla) then i put a individually wrapped cheese slice, egg patty, and canadian bacon slice (before i was dieting a sausage patty) (i suppose a slice of turkey bacon cut in half would work too) then i bag up the kit in a ziplock and freeze, then in the morning just pull it out, toast the bread and put the egg/meat in the microwave while the toaster is going, add the cheese and make the sandwich. super easy and yummy, and way cheaper than the cafe.

  • Alternative bagel with one serving of egg beaters in between. I definitely can tell a big difference if I don't eat a bigger breakfast, not even the fact that I'm hungrier earlier before lunch but I also eat much more at night. So cliche, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day...

Ooh. I could probably do this.  We do have a toaster.  What did you use for the egg?
  • i buy frozen egg patties at walmart in the frozen breakfast section (next to the frozen precooked sausage patties. they microwave very well . i put the meat on top to help the egg steam as it cooks to keep it fluffy.
