Rest days

Question: how do you choose your rest days?

Is it determined by your exercise plan? Do you base it on how you feel on a given day? Do you plan it in advance (as in, "I always take Tuesday off")? If you've planned on taking a day off late in the week, and you have to take a day off before that (like for sickness or being too busy or whatever) do you take the later day off too?

I'm just curious what other people do. I generally plan on taking one day off per week. I usually plan on taking a particular day off, either because I know if will be hard to fit a workout in on that day, or because I think I will physically need a rest day on that day. However, if I wake up one morning and can't get out for my run, I just use that day as my day off, and try to fit my workout in on the other day. If I can't, I just suck it up and take two days off that week. But I hate that.

(And usually I try to take Saturday off. I like sleeping in and not worrying about getting up and running before getting chores done. Plus I like to clean my apartment on my rest day, so at least I'm getting some movement in.)
