Getting in Shape

Skin Care

I am about 11 months away from my wedding!
I am 20 years old and still have acne prone skin (ew).
I was hoping some of you lovely ladies would have some recomendations on DRUGSTORE skincare regimens. I am pinching pennies, so I need something affordable!

On another note, any recomendations on deoderant thats got a good cover up scent and doesn't leave white marks on clothes?

Thanks for your time!!!!!

Re: Skin Care

  • Walgreens has some excellent generic versions of pricier brands.  That's my go-to makeup and beauty products stop

*I like the Ponds(or generic) face wipes.  They're a wet-wipe that has a bumpy exfoliating side. They smell like aloe. I love them.  Great for your whole face, not drying but controls oil.
*I get a salicylic acid cream that is great for spot treatment. Dries them out really quick.
*Oil of Olay night cream is fantastic for moisturizing without adding oil, despite the name.  i think the Walgreens generic is called Oil of Beauty
*I use the Secret clinical deodorant.  You put it on at night and get protection all the next day.  No white marks at all for me.

You might get more responses posting this on the Beauty board.

That being said, a healthy diet that limits processed foods and includes healthy fats, healthy carbs, lean protein and LOTS of water has done wonders for my skin.

You may also want to look into food allergies or intolerances.  Some people who have allergies to milk products tend to breakout as a results of ingesting them.

That being said, you're still young, and that's probably playing a roll too.

I have used proactiv since I was in high school, but when I was in college and living on a tighter budget, I used the clean and clear 3-step program that is very similar to proactiv. I think it might be around 20 bucks and lasts a while. They also sell the products individually so if you run out of one a lot sooner than the others, you can just buy that one instead of purchasing another whole kit. Good luck!!

  • I don't have much help in the skincare--I like Proactive but it gets pricey.  Biore wash with the astringent afterwards works well too.  For deodorant, I like Degree clinical protection in Sexy Intrigue or Classic Romance--both smell AMAZING and I've had people ask me what perfume I'm wearing when I'm not...it's just really good smelling deodorant.  They don't leave white on clothes either since they're a soft solid.

  • Choosing the actual products is normally a very individual thing. People break out for different reasons and have different skin types, so different products will work for you that won't work as well for others.
The main idea of all regimes is threefold: cleanser, exfloliant, and moisturizer. Those three products will comprise almost all skin lines out there. If you don't wash your face now, you might want to start with something gentle like cetaphil. It's a little bit more expensive but it lasts an ridiculously long time. If you do wash your face, try any of the acne cleansers out there. Get the trial size if you can, some will work for you and others won't. Do the same with a scrub/pad exfoliant and make sure your moisturizer has SPF!
  • I use Neuotrogena Stress Control.. it is AMAZING! I highly recommend it.
  • I have dry, but oily, sensitive, acne prone skin.  I started oil cleansing, treating with tea tree oil, and moisturizing with jojoba oil 2 weeks ago and my skin has honestly never looked or felt better.  It all sounds really scary, but it's pretty awesome.

  • There's a Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit cleanser I just bought (I'm too lazy to run to the shower to find the actual name!) that has salicylic acid in it, and I love how it makes my skin feel. For armpit odor, I switch it up between Dove anit-perspirant (which will leave white streaks if it gets on your clothes) and deodorant (Trader Joe's unscented) which doesn't. Here's a better trick: turn the shirt inside out. Turn it so the tag is right in front of your face.  Throw the collar over your head from the front, and reach your arms up to put it on. Then it doesn't matter if you get white spots since it's on the inside!! (FI taught me this trick. Brillant!)
  • I use the Acnefree brand, it's just like Proactive but much cheaper and I think it works better. I have acne prone skin too and I have heard lately that cutting out dairy really helps. For me it's hard to give that up so I haven't tried this yet but I am planning on doing it a couple weeks before the wedding. I have heard it's works great for those of us who have tried lots of washes, creams, aned so on and havent found the results we want.
