Oatmeal Suggestions?

So the idea of eating oatmeal sounds really good to me, especially since I'm getting tired of the greek yogurt/granola breakfast. But I really do not care for it, or at least I can't stomach plain oatmeal - even the smell rolls my stomach. Anyone have recipes or flavor suggestions that will help "cover up" the oatmeal-y taste?

Re: Oatmeal Suggestions?

  • Add Nutella!! It's not the most healthy thing, but 1 TBSP is about 100 calories. Peanut butter is another option. My second favorite (after Nutella) is some brown sugar or maple syrup and fresh or dried fruit. Mmm, I'm going to have some oatmeal for breakfast tomorrow!

  • My nearly every day breakfast is overnight oats done up in the following way:

    1/3 cup oats
    2/3 scoop chocolate protein powder
1/3 cup plain fat free yogurt
    1/3 cup skim milk
    1 Tbsp natural peanut butter

In the morning I heat it up a bit (90 seconds, stirring halfway) and then add in a chopped up banana (and some chia and flax seeds).  SO GOOD.

  • Just add a little bit of honey to your bowl as a natural sweetener.  It is amazing on oatmeal!!!

  • I agree with honey! I also add cinnamon and berries. I buy Irish Oatmeal from Whole Foods and like it better than regular Quaker Oatmeal.

  • A Facebook friend of mine has a blog where she posts different recipes that are healthy but yummy. She posted this "peanut butter cup oatmeal". I haven't tried it but it sounds SUPER good to me and I definitely want to try it!

  • I love Oatmeal with craisins and a little honey or Splenda, I think that's probably my favorite.

I also eat Oatmeal with 1/2 a cup of light vanilla ice cream for dessert a lot. It's really good, I love the hot/cold thing. Sometimes I add berries too.
  • I like apples and cinnimon in my oatmel. FI hates oatmeal and even he tried it because it smells amazing.

  • I don't know the last time I ate oatmeal plain, lol

I don't add these all at the same time but these are just suggestions:
    - brown sugar
    - raisins
    - blueberries
    - strawberries
    - jam or jelly
    - honey or fat free maple syrup
    - a sliced banana
    - apple sauce
and... Chocolate chips (when I run out of raisins, lol)

my "regular" mix is a teaspoon (or tablespoon) of brown sugar and then a bunch of raisins (enough to have at least 1 per bite)

    Good luck!

  • I actually prefer savory oatmeal to sweet.  Lately I've been sauteing mushrooms and green onions, along with an egg, in some cooking spray and putting that on top of oatmeal.  Then I might add a little bit of olive oil and/or some parmasan cheese, along with salt and pepper.  Its higher in calories, but very healthy, filling and it is delicious - tastes like Thanksgiving stuffing!
  • Trader Joe's has a great steel cut outmeal that comes frozen and has a slight brown sugar flavor. It is ready in the micro in about 3 mins. I highly recommend it!
  • Two possibles:  the one I eat, and the one my fiance eats:

    Mine:   250 calories and delicious
    1/2 cup old fashioned oatmeal
1 tsp honey crunch wheat germ
1 tsp flax seed (either whole seeds or milled)

I put that in a taller bowl, fill it with water - and microwave for 3 mins

when its done, I add 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder OR 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder with some freeze dried raspberries

Fiances:  About 325 calories and smells good?!  Never tasted it
    1/2 cup oatmeal
    fills it with skim milk

    Microwaves for 3 minutes

Then he puts 1 scoop vanilla protein powder and some Trader Joes natural low-calorie Maple Syrup.

  • I second the Trader Joe's steelcut oats...so delicious.  Especially good with a handful of blueberries or blackberries mixed in.
  • I always add pumpkin, cinnamon, honey, raisins, and then egg whites...super-good and a dose of protein!

OR I bake it for a long time in the oven, with chopped apples, cinnamon, honey, raisins...sooo good you'll want to eat oatmeal EVERY day!!
