Getting in Shape

Cheat Days...I just can't do them...anyone else?

I've been very good  (basically no white) and lost about 7lbs in July. This weekend I did a planned cheat for a wedding I went to and I gained 2lbs. I don't think I went that wild...but I had cake for the first time in forever and I seem to be more senstiive to carbs and gaining than protein of the caloric equavalent.

Has anyone else noticed this kind of thing? I'm getting married in 60 days and I just am not going to hit my goal if I keep slipping up.

I'm bummed today. Heading to the gym soon.

  • You probably didn't gain 2 lbs of fat.  It's likely water weight because your body just isn't used to those kinds of foods anymore.

To have gained 2 lbs of fat you'd need to have eaten an extra 7,000 calories.  I highly doubt that's the case, unless you ate the entire wedding cake.

Focus on getting enough water over the next few days, go back to your normal eating patterns and those 2 lbs should disappear.

  • My guess is your weight gain is probably more from sodium intake than carbs, unless you know you consumed an extra 7000 calories this weekend.  Sometimes, it just doesn't make sense why we randomly gain.  And FWIW, just to test it out, I have weighed myself at different points in the day, and 'gained' 5 lbs, just to be the same/lower starting weight the next morning.

I would suggest following a lifestyle change you can uphold even after the wedding, or you will  be pigging out afterwards.  I hope you reach your goal, and just keep continuing with healthy eating and working out!  This is also why I weigh in on Thursdays, that way if I ate something 'bad' over the weekend, I have time to work off water weight.. or just weight in general, lol.  GL!

  • I'm trying not to do cheat days because my cheat days turn into cheat weekends.

Kayak, your wedding pictures are great! You looked beautiful!

  • I agree with what everyone else is saying!  I was going through the same thing EVERY weekend for about a month.  One weekend I even gained 5 lbs!!!  and then lost it in 3 days.  BUT it is still very frustrating.  I have found that I have to be very strict and really limit my cheat "meals", there is no way I can do cheat days anymore :( .  This weekend I was really proud of myself and didnt gain an ounce!
  • I agree!  My FI did Weight Watchers once before, and his methodology was to use the 35 flex points over Fri./Sat./Sun. each week, then stick to his allotted points (no flex points) Mon.-Thurs.

He suggested I do the same, but I know that if I used that method, I'd just keep going on Monday.  I have to try to stay within my 22 points every day - that way, I might dip into my flex points a bit, but never get seriously off-track.
  • I hate hate hate that!  Every weekend I go to Ocean City boardwalk, NJ and I get a treat.  It can be bagels in the morning and a small sugar free fat free ice cream in the evening.  And I can come back Monday and weigh like 3 lbs more,

I really hate that too.  and then I eat super healthy during the week (as I do all summer) and then the weekend comes again, and I have my treat and still be 1-4 lbs overweight depending how bad I did that weekend.

Sometimes I have Mac and Mancos Pizza.  It's usually just pizza, bagels, ice cream and those are my only treats except when I went to applebees twice this summer and got applebees boneless buffalo wings.

I usually get one or two treats per week, and always on the weekends

  • I used to work with Bill Phillips and he is the one that did Body for Life. He suggested having 1 cheat day a week. So my cheat day was on Sundays and I would eat whatever I wanted and as much as I possibly could. I would stick to a strict 1200 to 1400 calories on the other days. I would make myself so sick on Sundays that I wouldn't crave anything bad the rest of the week. Come Monday, I was motivated to get back to the gym and work it off. It really worked for me.
These days I have a couple of cheat meals a week instead of all in one day. And while I'm very conscience of all my calories I still think the cheat day on one designated day works better for me than the random couple of meals a week. I have to be strict with myself or I can easily fall off the wagon.

  • Thanks, Married!  :-D  Everything turned out so well, and I ended up losing 15 lbs before the big day.  Of course, you know the next day it was *pouring* outside, haha.

I love your dress!  I was in a DB with my mom, looking for her dress, a couple of months before the wedding, and I saw that one.  I fell. in. love. with it.  It took all my will power not to go try that one on!  Where in Indiana are you?  I lived in the south bend area when i was younger.

As someone from NJ, I love this! That is the best pizza...

I have the same problem. I've been trying to diet and exercise for about a month and I've gained 8 pounds. Before my son I could just work at it alittle and lose weight. Now I think I'm gaining because I cheat on the weekends. I really need to stick to 1 cheat meal a day and not a whole weekend. Its very frustrating though.

I'm the SAME way. If I cheat a little bit I think "well a little more of this won't hurt...." and then it's all ruined!

  • Weight fluctuates quite a bit. I'm on WW and I have to use my WPs early in the week.  I don't use any for about 3-4 days before weigh in.

I've also noticed for two weeks in a row that I've been 3 lbs heavier on Saturday (my weigh in day) than on FridayFrown.
  • I think you guys summed it up...my cheat meals turn into cheat weekends and it's so easy to keep going on Monday.

I'm really trying to limit it. Excercise isn't what takes weight off for me...it's food.

I get one taste of sugar or something sweet and then it's like I can't stop.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

</div><div>I also have one meal cheat day once per week.  It helps though.  Eliminating all bad foods will backfire later in your diet.  I ate anything as long as it's within my caloric intake.  </div>
