Is this normal?

So I went to Robbins Brothers this weekend to buy our weddin bands. We picked the rings out and went to go pay. I asked the sales guy how long before the ring would come in and I could pick it up...he looked at me like I was crazy and stated "what do you mean...this is your ring"

Apparently you don't get a new ring, you get the one in the display case....I was really upset needless to say.

My FI said it wasn't that big of a deal but I think it is...I tried to explain that other people had tried on this band a million times...that I wanted a NEW band that had only been worn by ME. Am I overreacting or is this normal?

Whe I got my engagement ring from Jareds it took like three weeks to come in so I assume it was brand new.

I voted other because for me it would depend on the condition of the ring. If it was in perfect condition, I wouldn't really care. If it had so much as 1 little scratch or imperfection, I would have them order a new one.
At least I think that would be my reaction-- I wouldn't exactly know since I had my ring custom made.

Ok, so I wouldn't say you're over-reacting...but my ring was the one in the display.  Yeah, I would have rather had one that hadn't been tried on a million times but it wasn't like there were visible scratches or anything.  Plus, it kind of gave me a piece of mind to know that before we bought it the people in the store checked the ring for any defects in front of me and I knew that it had been inspected well.

We had to order my husband's ring because his is made out of tungston (I think....) and it can't be sized down (or something like that)

yes, this is normal, but i don't think you are overreacting since i feel the same way! i had my rings custom made, so i didn't have to worry about that problem. my FI's was out of the case, but had to be sized, so i figured it would be cleaned and such at that point and that was good enough for me. his ring was 50% off and would have been full price to order a new one!
is the rings something like white gold? if so, and you bought the warranty, then you can just send it off at anytime to get refinished and that is good as new!

My story is the same as Mariah's.  My ring size was the same as the display.  We double checked the band before making the purchase.  We didn't take it with us because Chris had it sent off to be engraved.

Chris' had to be ordered because his finger is larger than the sample size.  My engagement ring did have to be ordered since he changed up the setting and stone.

I had custom rings so I'm not sure what the normal procedure is.  But if the ring is the same whether it's display or ordered I don't think I would care much?  Was it a Robbins Bro brand ring or a designer?  I can see if it's the latter, they'd have to order it made in your size from a designer.  But if it's the former, then what's the difference in them resizing the sample one or just getting one from another Robbins Bros and resizing?

Again, we did custom so I'm not too familiar, this is all speculation.

My engagement ring is 18k white gold but the wedding band is palladium...it was like $300 cheaper and when i put the two next to one another you could not tell the difference :)

Mine had to be resized as well...however FI got to take his home that same day. So when they resize it and I get it back Im going to inspect the crap out of it and hopefully it will look brand new

EDIT: It is not a Robbins Brother ring...it is Scott Kay (one of their higher end designers there)

my FI got a scott kay ring as well... they can order it if you ask.... at least i know Jared's and .... shucks, i can't remember where we actually bought his ring, but it was in the highlands next to the aveda salon.

My engagement ring is from the display...I wasn't there...he did the shopping and selecting on his own, unbeknownst to me.  I'm fine with it...He did a great job picking it out...
Now.  The wedding bands...I don't know what I'll expect.  I found the bands at Robbins Brothers that I want...so we will see.  I'm sure that they will have to be ordered. I am a size 4 1/2.

What the sales guy did was take the display case ring and they are going to resize it down to a size 5

I probably would've felt the same way.  Because the way I see it, it's a display and they should have more in the back that are the same size as the display one.  Either that or they order you one if they don't have one in the store.  Because if you bought the display ring, then they would have to order a new one to replace the display you took, right?  It just seems odd that they would sell you their only display (I'm assuming on this aspect) when you were willing (and expecting) to wait a few weeks.

My engagement ring was ordered in advance, and we told the store what bands we liked, so they had those rings in our sizes when we came to pick our bands out.

I think this is pretty normal. Mine came from the display case, and honestly, I hadn't ever thought about it until you brought it up.

I guess because once I saw it, I knew it was mine. So to me, everyone who had tried it on before didn't really matter. As long as it's not damaged, I don't see the problem.

Think about it this way....I'm sure your FI has been with other women before you, right? But you still want him just the way he is..."used" or not!? Wink

I have absolutely no idea on this...never thought about it to be honest.  I always thought you got a new one.  But I'm smaller than the avg size.  When we went to Robbins Bros, they told us that everything was CZ so if you had diamonds in any of your ring, they would have to replace it.  I have had some color issues with my band though, so this may possibly explain why.

Hmmm.... now that you further explain your situation, I do find it a little odd (with the resizing and all).  FI got a Scott Kay ring (not from Robbins Bros but a similar type chain jewelry store) and he was the display size, for taking the display ring we were offered a discount...

I think that it is completely normal. I'm sure they only have 1 maybe 2 of each style in store, especially the higher-end designs. Once they sell then the manufacturer will send another to replace it. Mine was slightly different though cause it was a loose diamond, but it was set in another ring that was in the case.
