Getting in Shape

Keep the curves, get rid of the jiggle.

I haven't been active on TK in about a year so forgive this if its kind of random.

I recently bought my dress and its a "fit and flare" or mermaid style. It hugs in the right spots i'm just paranoid about that ever so stubborn belly area and arms ( would also like to get rid of the inner thigh area but mostly arms and belly)..

How do i keep my shape while battling the bulge?

also note that i have arthritis in my knees that flares up basically anytime its hot, or cold or rains. So running is out of the question. I regularly do 5k (walks for charity)  but this year due to our tight budget I dont have the $$ for the fees to sign up.

I was jumping rope for a while and didnt notice any real change except my calves which are already huge (think softball player)

I use an app to keep track of my calories and usually come in somewhere around 1500 (w/o exercise) I am on a SUPER STRICT budget which doesn't allow for a gym membership, or cable (hello basic nbc cbs pbs abc thats it!)

Are there any budget friendly ways to get in shape?

Thanks Ladies

Re: Keep the curves, get rid of the jiggle.

  • It doesn't cost anything to go out and run.  Try the C25K (<--- clicky) if you are a beginner.

Also get the "New Rules of Weight Lifting For Women" from the library.  They have some great strength training ideas, much of which does not need equipment.
  • What about Netflix? They have a lot of workout videos and membership is really cheap.
  • you have to do cardio. try to find some way of doing it. you always need to do some muscle training. crunches will obviously take care of the bulge.. as far as your arms go check out youtube for some instructional videos. there are plenty of things you can do to work your arms without weights.

  • borrow some workout dvds from a friend, coworker, family member... you might even find a work-out buddy this way.

I'm trying to get my "under arm jingle jangle" back under control. I am doing modified push-ups (on my knees) and arm exercises with 5 lb weights. If you don't have weights, grab a bottle of water or a book, something with a little weight. You can find different arm exercises online that cater to the areas you want to work on. For the belly bulge, I'm doing the plank (lay on your belly, pick yourself up with only your toes and forearms on the ground, 3 sets of 30 seconds in the air) , crunches, full pushups, and scissor kicks. They really target your abs and you can feel it the entire time you're working out. I am also going to the gym and doing cardio and weight traning there. Also, for arms, you can do the arm circles (forward and backward). I do those while watching TV sometimes. Good luck!
  • Try sparkpeople.com it is a free program that helps you track food calories and it has many excercise and health tips for you.
  • When I was really broke (I still had cable though which I know you said you don't have) I used the free videos on that.  Just like with those videos or any videos you can borrow from a friend or buy for $10 you can substitute things they use along with it.  I didn't have weights for the longest time so I used soup cans and it still totally worked.  If I needed a ball I used a ball my daughter had.  I never used a floormat or anything else they asked for and totally got in shape at home with no exercise equipment.  On tv they have fitness shows too you just have to look for them.

  • Seriously, try the library. I know my local library has workout videos you can rent- everything from yoga to jillian michaels. The great thing about this is you can switch it up as often as you want so that you don't get bored because you can borrow them for free! :]

  • Spot reduction is a lie. lol No matter what you do you ARE going to lose weight/inches from your entire body.  The good news, is that your curves are usually still there due to your bone and hip structure. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Swimming is probably going to be your most effective workout if you have access to a pool.  It is joint-friendly and is great cardio while working pretty much every muscle group.  Aside from that, things like planks (like PP suggested) and pushups are great.  You can also lay on your stomach, prop yourself up on your elbows and toes (like a pushup but on your elbows) and hold that position for a minute or so. lift 1 leg at a time if you can.  those are great for your core muscles. Perhaps try a dance/zumba/yoga video too?

Check out youtube for some videos.  I remember finding a 10 minute cardio that was awesome.

Its great that you're finding ways to move, but also remember to treat your body well too by focusing on what you're feeding it.  Make sure you eat balanced meals with as many fresh ingredients as possible.  I'm not a fan of "you cant eat ___" types of diets, but I AM a fan of eating fresh ingredients instead of processed chemical crap.  you can find some great budget-friendly meals on allrecipes.com  =)
  • hmm you can buy a pilates workout dvd orr one of the biggest loser 30 day shread ones. it's really effictive and you do it in the comfort of your own home (: the dvd's range from about 7-15 dollars
    good luck!<3
