Getting in Shape

Getting Down to Business

I am a new knottie. I've been engaged for...28 hours, and I really want to get into better shape for the big day. We haven't picked a date yet, but we are aiming for October 2012 so I can finish my Nursing degree.

Here's the thing: I am obese. That's a sentence that I've been choking on for awhile but it's finally out. I am 5' 2" and I weigh 300 lbs. I am 20 years old, and I have always been overweight, and then 2 years ago I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which doesn't help anything (for those of you who don't know, hypothyroidism makes it harder to lose weight).

So here are my goals:
1) start an exercise schedule (and stick to it)
2) eat healthier foods, in correct portions
3) achieve a healthy weight for my height (130 lbs)

Any advice you can give me would be appreciated and welcomed.
Thanks for listening.

Re: Getting Down to Business

  • Congrats on your engagement! And finishing nursing...I graduated from Madonna for Nursing. I applaud you for taking the big step and realizing you want to become healthy. I know what your hours are with school and clinicals and if you have a job; its not always easy to eat healthy. I gained about 40 lbs during nursing school and have been working hard to keep it off. I think inspiration and hard work are the keys to your goal. I find inspiration in my spin class at my Y. The women there are always so interested in exchanging healthy eating habits and more toning exercises. I always find them to be uplifting. I would definitely invest in a few things: a gym membership and a heart rate monitor that counts calories (i just bought a new balance one at target for $63 and love it). Try all different kinds of cardio and see what you like. I also have the app loseit on my phone and I love that too. It forces me to write down what i put in my mouth and how many calories everything is. Its very eye opening! Start off slow; you have to change your lifestyle and you can't expect to do it overnight or just for the wedding. You will have good days and you will have bad days, but if you can do nursing school, you can do this!!!! I wish you the best of luck and congratulations again!!
