Ways to get more water?

I just don't get thirsty a lot, so I usually don't get as much water as I should. What ways help you to remember and be motivated to drink more water?

Re: Ways to get more water?

  • I have one of those 20oz aluminum water bottles at my desk in addition to a thermal mug. I refill both constantly; one with hot herbal tea and one with plain water. Then I will switch back and forth. In the morning I like the feeling of drinking hot tea (at least the first few hours) since it is somewhat soothing. I am the same as Brianabrad above - now that I drink so much regularly I crave it. Before that, I used to take a swallow of water every time I got an email as a way to remind myself! I would go through my bottle of water easily about once an hour. (This probably only works if you are getting lots of email every hour.)

  • I keep a 1L water bottle at my desk.  I find I drink water more if it's really cold so I also keep a cup of ice at my desk that I refill constantly from my water bottle.  I try to drink 2 full bottles per day but it's usually around 1.5 by the time I leave.  I usually have some more on the way home or with dinner.

  • ditto laurenclaire - when i'm at work i bring two liter-sized nalgenes and i tell myself that i'll finish the first one by noon... and have the second one gone by five. sometimes i can't if i'm away from my desk (or freezing) but i usually get most of it down!

before i made the conscious effort to drink more, i thought i was never thirsty either, and now i feel like i need that water all day!

  • I'm the same way - on the weekends when I'm not on my normal schedule, I've begun to crave more water. At work during the week I have a 32 oz. bottle and try to drink at least 1.5-2 of them a day. At first, I had to make myself drink some every 10 minutes or so and now I need it and don't have to time myself.

  • Mine is kind of a long story:

I took a health promotions course a while back, and they said a handy rule of thumb is to take your weight, divide it in half, and that number is the amount of oz of water you should be drinking per day (more if you workout that day). My number comes out to be about 65oz per day. And I'm one of those weirdo perfectionists that tries to get all that in before I go home from work, because I don't usually know what I'll have to drink after I get home (it usually is water, but sometimes it's wine or or a couple beers).

Back in January, FI and I were at this place called Total Wine, and I saw they were selling VOSS water, so I picked up a few bottles. And that was the last time I've bought a bottle of water LOL. Since the VOSS bottles are glass, I can throw them in the dishwasher to clean them, and they didn't cost nearly as much as a Nalgene or aluminum bottle would cost me. Plus, they look really cool. Cool I always have one at my desk, and I'm constantly refilling them at the water fountain by the bathroom when I get up to go pee LOL.

I carry a reusable 1.5L bottle around everywhere. I refill it atleast 3 times a day. I drink not quite cold/not quite room temp water, i find I chug faster if its not cold.
  • I live in high altitude so I'm thirsty ALL the time. I take my 32oz Nalgene with me everywhere. I usually drink 2.5 - 3 of them before I leave work. It's a little harder on the weekends, but I'm usually drinking wine so I try to finish a Nalgene before I start on the sauce.

One thing that I've found helpful is to drink a 16oz glass of ice water while I'm cooking dinner. It fills me up a little so I don't overeat or snack too much while I'm cooking.

Me too! I have a 32 ounce nalgene bottle at work (4, 8 oz glasses of water). I drink 1.5-2 a day. Then I have a big glass of water with dinner and another before bed when I take my vitamins.
