when do you weigh in?

Hi everyone :) I'm kind of re-starting my diet/exercise plan, and am a little lost on tracking my progress accurately. I figured this would be a good place to ask, what is your weigh-in routine?

How often do you weigh in? Daily? Weekly? What time of day? I know my weight can fluctuate 2-3 lbs within one day, so I'm not sure when is the best time (or if it matters as long as you're consistent).

  • I always do it in the morning, once a week (usually Friday). I have a hard time getting to the gym on the weekends so I like to do it before I go downhill. I also skip the week before my period (I know bad idea) but I tend to feel really fat anyway even though I'm not, so no good comes from getting on the scale.

  • I weigh myself 1-2 days a week, when I remember...so I guess no great advice because I am not consistent.  What I am consistent about is te fact I always use the same scale, at the same time of day, in the same clothes.  Less variables that way.  I was weighed at the gym with my personal trainer a couple weeks ago and it was discouraging because she weighed me at 5 p.m., when I usually weigh myself first thing in the morning, and I had heavier clothes on. So my suggestion is eliminate variables as much as possible.

  • I'm bad. I know you're not supposed to weigh yourself daily, but I do. Every day, when I wake up, after using the restroom (if I need to). Sorry if that last bit was too much information. I have an electronic scale which measure down the the decimal, so I like to monitor my flucutations even day to day. It's like a daily reminder for me to eat well. I'm more likely to cheat if I only weigh once a week, if that makes sense. Anyway, good luck!

  • I play wii fit everyday so that weighs me everyday about an hour after dinner. I do my "official" weigh-ins Saturday morning. As a way to remind myself not to let a week's worth of hard work go to hell just b/c its the weekend.
  • I use to every day. Now just once or twice a week. Sometimes before and after I go to the bathroom because it makes me laugh.

  • I weigh myself on Monday .... but If I could do it again, I would weigh myself on FRIDAY!!!! I only kept it at Monday because that's when I started weight watchers...

Sometimes it will go up just a little, or stay the same for a few days, but then on day 4 or 5 it will go down quite a bit. So I would say find a day/days that work for you in order to hold yourself accountable for your progress.</div>
  • I do my "official" weigh ins Friday mornings in my birthday suit, before I eat breakfast! :) I also weigh myself randomly throughout the week sometimes, but I only count my Friday morning weight, to be consistent.
  • I weigh myself every time I go to the gym, which is usually on my lunch break M-F. The only day I write anything down is Wednesday, and that's my official weekly number. I'm just always curious, and I don't get caught up on one day's number, because the trend is downward. Some people can't do daily weigh ins, but it works for me, to keep me motivated. But you can't obsess over the number.
  • I try not to focus too much on what the scale says, but when i am trying to get skinnier, i do weigh myself occassionally (once a month or every other week) to make sure i'm on the right track. My wedding is making me a head case and i was weighing myself once a week. I was getting frustrated because the scale wasn't going down. I talked to my dad about it (he is also working on losing weight) and he suggested weighing myself everyday and documenting it. (He is an engineer so he puts everything into math or science perspective) By doing so, i see my body fluctuates every day, but over time my weight is going down. I think it helps me to be a little less crazy about it... or at least worry a little less.

    I also weigh myself right after i wake up in the morning.

  • I also weigh in on Friday mornings when I feel motivated to. I have found that I consistently weigh up to a pound or so less around 11-12 right before lunch then right when I get up in the morning. I still eat a light breakfast, and drink a cup of coffee, which for me, is a bit of a natural laxative (sorry..TMI).
