Getting in Shape

started c25k today

my wedding is Oct 1 2011 i am a size 18-20 right now and would LOVE to be at a size 8-10 before my dress hunt starts.  I started c25k today. It went good but i know it will only get harder in the next week. my issue is that i always feel like im going to die when i run. know i understand that i wont but i feel like i cant breath and i get light headed cuz i cant breath.....i need hints ....and i also gave up mounten dew today.....wish me luck on that one :)

Re: started c25k today

  • C25K is a really great program.  Just keep going.  If you're having trouble breathing, slow down.  If you need to take a walk break (or repeat a week to help build up your endurance) go for it.  Really the key is getting moving.

When I first started C25K I has some issues with shin splints and plantars fasciitis, something that really helped me was looking up proper running form and really focusing on that.  I just googled "running form" and read a few articiles.  I think there is a good one from Runner's World.

Another tip that helped me with breathing was to time my breathing with my foot falls.  Depending on how hard it was to breathe I'll either do 3 footfalls in, 3 footfalls out, or some other number to make sure I get enough air in.  I still do that when I'm doing intervals.

    Good luck!

  • thanks for the hints i looked up the website and it had alot of great things...i dont go back tell friday so for today its just NO MOUNTEN DEW owell cant be that hard right :)
  • Erin- good luck! Its a great program, but you have to stick with it. I didn't see any weight loss results from running, but I did lose some inches!!
If you're building muscle, it weighs too, so don't just look at the scale.

Make sure you are drinking PLENTY of water. One thing that helps my breathing while running is chewing gum. Sounds crazy but it works for me.

The great thing about that program is that it starts out slowly and builds up, so you don't experience the "I'm going to die" feeling and then just quit running. lol

Anyways, keep us updated on your progress! Also, the Couch to 5k running program is on facebook, and its a great place to get motivation and get advice from other runners.
  • SIL did c25k and she looks great! She's run in several 5ks since.  I gave up soda and did well the first week.  I sneak in one can every now and then, but I feel sooooo much better since I don't drink any carbonated bevvies.  Good luck!
