Nutrition bar question: re: soy protein isolate?

You girls seem to be experts in the healthy nutrition/ clean eating field!

What's your take on the bars (South Beach, Zone, Special K) that contain soy protein isolate?

Seen / heard conflicting info.

TIA!

Re: Nutrition bar question: re: soy protein isolate?

  • I would not personally eat them. They are just glorified candy bars.
Try to eat more whole foods but I guess if you are on the go and it's easy, I don't see the harm of eating it.
  • I, honestly, would be more concerned about the grams of sugar than soy protein isolate (SPI). As the PP stated, I don't see these anything more than a glorified candy bar. I'm not saying you should never eat them, but maybe as an occasional snack.

SPI is in so many things. It's used to hold chicken together, like in nuggets and patties. It's in breads, dressings, cheeses, soups, etc. I wouldn't be 'scared' of soy/soy products unless you have an intolerance/allergy or have thyroid issues.
  • I've been eating about two bars a day for the last 8 months. Just went to the doctor and was told I need to take more Vitamin D. Also, I noticed my estrogen levels seem to be high.

When I searched the SPI for a different reason, both inefficiency in absorbing Vitamin D and increased estrogen levels came up as warnings. So I posted here because I couldn't find an answer to how many bars were safe to eat. (Ie one a day, 3 a week, etc)

</div><div>Soy in general increases your estrogen. Can't you not get different nutrition bars that doesn't contain soy. Just go to a health food store and read the labels of different ones better yet you can make your own nutrition bars too. Just google 'recipes for nutrition bars' and try them out. You can make them in advance and eat when when you want it. </div><div>
</div><div>If you are only eating it once or twice a day for an average person who does not have an issue with their estrogen i think its ok to eat. If you also eat alternatives to meat or other sources of protein ie any soy products then sure in combination with the bars youre eating your estrogen will go up</div><div>
