Getting in Shape

Stuff your face

I came across this article while browsing Women's Health. I really like it for a variety of reasons.

Number one would be that the article focuses on what to add to your diet versus what to deprive yourself of. It talks about creating new habits and adding foods, which I think gave off a more positive vibe and make it seem easier to follow. And for me, things like that really work.

It's anti-diet and pro eating healthfully so I thought I'd share it :)

Enjoy!

  • I only read the first page but I am not sure how much is factual. One of the suggestions for getting more protein is "And when in doubt, reach for milk or cheese."
Eating a lot of cheese is a great way to consume way too many calories. There are a lot lower fat sources of protein. Then it says to eat lots of yogurt because "yogurt-based bacteria can prevent the body from absorbing fat. Bugs that eat your fat!" That just sounds crazy to me.

I know they are quoting studies, but a lot of studies are just done once and then the results aren't replicable or are contradicted by the next study.

pp: By "bugs" they mean the probiotic bacteria. There are actually a lot of studies and research information that do suggest that eating yogurt with probiotics can help you lose belly fat, especially after pregnancy. Although I do agree with you that it is sometimes hard to know when a study is reliable.

I also think that when it suggests that you snack on cheese or milk, they are not suggesting overeating. A snack should always be portioned. Eating too much cheese (or anything else) will make you gain weight, but a portioned snack won't.

Overall I though it was a good article, I especially like the part where it talks about diet sodas!!! YES! Finally someone is putting the truth out there. Diet sodas ARE NOT a good choice!! And I liked the last rule: it's unrealistic to think you are always going to make the right choice, so if you try most of the time, give yourself a break.
As they said, "Nobody’s perfect—and not trying to be perfect is one of the keys to long-term success. So don’t try to be perfect. Be 80 percent."

    I heartily agree.

  • I agree, portioned cheese intake is fine, but since I actually attribute a lot of my success with weight loss to reducing my cheese intake, the advice to "when in doubt, reach for cheese" rubs me the wrong way. (Yes, I used to eat a lot of cheese!)

An ounce of cheddar (which is around a slice or a 1 inch cube) is over 100 calories. So if you have 4 slices of cheddar you consume over 400 calories, which is approaching the calorie intake for an entire meal in my world (especially since you are probably eating that cheese on crackers or bread). I don't know if many people who haven't counted calories realize that.

Anyway, I went back and looked at the rest of the article and I did like a lot of what they said.
