Getting in Shape

First Dance

My fiance and I decided we wanted to do something fun and surprise everyone for our first dance. So, we're going to start off doing a traditional dance to our song, "Always with you, always with me," by Joe Satriani, and then we're going to add a beat and do a hip hop routine. Well, neither of us are dancers by any means and we took our first hip hop lesson yesterday morning.  It was SO hard! I know we have over a year until our wedding, but I'm kind of freaking out that I won't be able to get my body to dance in the hip hop style. It was so foreign to me that even when he was showing us how to do it, my arms were so tense and wouldn't loosen up. Any advice?

Re: First Dance

  • I would just keep practicing. Maybe yoga would help you loosen up a bit.
  • do a lot of stretching everyday, get your muscles loosened up..  and practice practice practice.. the more you do it the more your body will be used to the movements.
  • Yoga is a really good idea! Thank you! :)

  • A swing dance might be fun too... and possibly a little easier to learn the moves.  I know my body just can't figure out the hip-hop.

  • I feel like even if your hip hop portion of your dance isn't "perfect" - who cares....it's who you guys are that will make it unique.  If your friends and family know the two of you aren't the best at hip hop (or never imagined you guys doing it) I think it will shock them and they won't be knit-picking every move you guys do, they'll just enjoy watching the two of you having fun.

  • That's totally true and a great way to look at it! Thank you! :)
  • The biggest problem with those who can't hip hop is thinking that they can't. I taught it for years to teenagers and adults....it's all about being loose. It can feel awkward and silly at first for some people.
Yoga won't really help but practice does.
You had ONE lesson, be patient with it. If after a few months you still feel this way then maybe explore other dance options.
Also, it depends on the level of difficulty there is such a thing as easy hip hop that can still be fun and look good too. I'm sure your instructor knows what he/she is doing but if not, ask them to modify.
