Getting in Shape

Question about water....

Ok, so my new goal is to drink a lot more water every day.  I'm doing good so far, and actually starting to enjoy water.  But, I have to pee all the time!  I know people say your body will get used to it, but my question is WHEN?  I'm a teacher, and in a couple weeks, I'll be heading back to my work day schedule.... I'm afraid if I don't get used to it before then I'm gonna be in trouble, cuz I can't just leave the kids to go to the bathroom every 15-20 minutes.  Can anyone give me an idea as to how long it'll take my body to adjust?  I definitely sip throughout the day, so its not an issue of drinking too much all at once. Thanks for your input!

Re: Question about water....

  • well regardless of when your body starts gettong used to iy, keep it up..
if it really gets in the way dont drink as much...but water is your friend;)
  • How often do you go now?  And how often would you be able to go once you're back in school?

I drink about a 100-128oz. of water per day, and I don't really notice that I have to go all that often.

I drink a glass when I first wake up in the morning, and then maybe some more if I'm still thirsty and make sure I stop at the bathroom before I leave for work.  Then I just drink throughout the day, but if I know that I won't be able to get to a bathroom in the near future I won't down 32oz. in the hour :)  I have found that once I was set in my schedule that it hasn't been too difficult...

    GL! :)
  • I constantly drink water and I am constantly peeing. FI tells me I'm like a puppy. I think some people just have smaller bladders. It's great you're drinking a ton of water, but if you're urine is clear, you're perfectly hydrated. While it's nice to sip on some extras, I wouldn't force myself to drink water unless I was really thirsty.

  • I agree with the clear pee poster....you don't want to drink too too much water because you can put yourself in danger of losing essential electrolytes that your heart needs to function.
  • i peel all the time - it's actually kind of funny. but i do drink 2 liters of water while just at work, and probably another while at home. you will eventually get used to it, and will have to pee less, but still more often than if you were dehydrated. if you're working out a good bit and sweating a lot, i would say aim for a liter or two or three each day - but don't go over a gallon or so unless you're really working out, or spending a lot of time outside in the heat.

You don't lose electrolytes unless you're sweating, your body fluids just become too diluted to function properly.

This is correct. Drinking too much water can dilute the electrolytes in your blood (there is such a thing called water intoxication which comes from drinking too much water) but you seriously have to drink a TON of water in a short amount of time to do this. It wont rid of these electrolytes however. This only comes from sweating.

Water is good. Water is your friend. Your body may or may not get used to having that much water, as everyone's bladder is different. If you find that you're peeing too much for your liking, take the amount of water down a bit. Everyone is supposed to drink 8-8oz glasses a day. If you'd like more, drink 12. This will be PLENTY of water for your body, and will keep you from being in the bathroom every 20 minutes.

Good luck with this and with school starting!!! =]
  • Don't worry about water intoxication unless you're seriously chugging a gallon of water at once. It's really only super athletes (like Tour de France riders) who worry about drinking too much water.

  • Hey, Vballgirl, I hear you on the whole difficulty with peeing 25 times during the work day. It just doesn't work! So I try to space out my water intake. Some in the morning, some in the afternoon, then on the drive home, then while I'm making dinner, then when I'm watching TV. Spreading it out over the day helps with that whole gotta-pee-every-2-minuts. :-)

  • I don't think your body ever gets used to it.  I drink a lot of water, except for when I work.  I am a jfreelance ournalist and I am out in the field all day and may not have bathroom access, so I drink no more than one bottle of water in that 8 hour period.  Water just runs through me, so if I odn't know if I'm near a bathroom I will limit it until I know I can go.
